Lineker, Wright and Shearer greatly overestimate their punditry talents IMO. If we really must have post-match pundits at all, and that's debatable to say the least, I would shed no tears if all three of them were permanently subbed off.
I’d say that they are by some way the most knowledgeable, charismatic and entertaining pundits on any channel on any sportLet’s not let our political prejudice and team allegiances detract from that

One of the conditions of working for the BBC is that you don't publicly wade into politics. He has done it numerous times and is insistent that he will not be complying with his employers policies. Any organisation should be looking to move someone like that on.
So Alan Sugar should watch his back?mikef said:

Well this is going well for them.
BBC to air Match of the Day without presenters after Gary Lineker’s suspension
The Beeb now looking a bit silly. What if commentators at matches decide to down mikes as well? BBC to air Match of the Day without presenters after Gary Lineker’s suspension
This could save the BBC a fortune!

For me they contribute little verging on nothing extra to my enjoyment of football on TV. The only thing they are experts in is stating the bleedin obvious.
Probably a separate debate though. If you asked me whether I think Linekar is worth £1.5M or whatever it is I'd probably say no.
That doesn't mean that the BBC seems to have got itself in a right old pickle over this.

Why don't they just rip the plaster off and give him his P45? It's been a long time coming as he's breached the policy of talking about politics multiple times.
Let's face it: the man is grossly overpaid for what he does. It's a surprise with BBC claiming to be cutting costs that they haven't culled him.

Whether you agree with him, or not, he is an ex footballer and advertiser of crisps, however he is employed by the BBC he represents it as he is on their programs.
It isnt that he isnt entitled to opinion, just that he should keep it to himself as football pundit, we respect his opinion on football matters but I dont want telling how to think on immigration policy. It isn't his job, and without his job he wouldn't really have a platform.
He is a very wealthy man, telling those who dont have a 3 million quid contract flogging unhealthy food what he thinks, maybe pipe down and stop being a bit of a hypocrite ?

You’ll be limiting your comments to threads on databases from here on then I assume? Since you are so happy with censorship. The government must look longingly at Russia and China. They act like a tinpot version of those regimes.
His Twitter is his business and the BBC shouldn’t have any say over it. The imbeciles in government most definitely shouldn’t have any say over it.
If you aren’t interested in his political opinions don’t follow him. It’s not difficult.

He didn't make the comments in BBC time and pay.
He is a contractor, so not a direct employee
He isnt in a role that demands impartiality
He is free to speak his mind, in his own time and not be cancelled.
I would argue the same if Shearer tweeted his support for Sunak and waxed lyrically about Brexit.

It all seems quite self made. I don't follow twitter and wouldn't be aware of this ex-footballer's views had outlets, primarily the BBC, been so keen to amplify them.
By essentially banning him from hosting MOTD they've made Lineker's views seem much more important than they really are! Hoisted, petard etc.

They're turned a single tweet into themselves being the story just because a bunch of Conservative MPs lost their st over it.
