I wonder how many parents actually wanted schools closed, or was it just a vocal minority?

I certainly didn't, I saw no danger in sending my daughter to school, and I'm sure many other parents felt the same. I recall a parent on one of the Zoom sessions telling the teacher that her daughter couldn't manage at home, so she would be sending her to school.

He said in parliament that he made the decision after consulting with the British Retail Consortium and it seems likely to me that it was designed primarily to get people back in shops. Just as ‘eat out to help out’ tried to get them back into restaurants.

Interestingly, the rules did not apply to shop workers, suggesting again that disease control was not the driver. Remember that would have theoretically protected shoppers, which apparently was unnecessary.

It’s obvious that advice on masks was not based on science, but on politics. But some people want to believe in them based on blind faith.
It was, indeed, very obvious that mask wearing was justified by only one type of "science".

In March 2020 SAGE SPI-B behavioural scientists said:
Wearing facemasks outside of the house could complement existing government messaging of social responsibility if communicated alongside the effectiveness of masks in protecting others who are not infected. Wearing a facemask could demonstrate that an individual is concerned for other peoples’ welfare and is enacting desired social norms around safety and hygiene.
Since that politically-inspired flip to "Masks work!", The Science has been desperately trying to justify its u-turn.

The whole communication, with the above quoted paragraph in context...

and the role of SPI-B

said:
SPI-B is not asked to comment, and has not commented, on what interventions are effective
or when they should be triggered. Instead, the group is asked to provide advice aimed at
anticipating and helping people adhere to interventions that are recommended by medical
or epidemiological experts.

Here in Australia I remember watching our PM on TV one morning in early 2020 announcing that we were going to have a "lock-down" for several weeks. A journalist asked him about masks and he said "there is absolutely no evidence to show they're effective" so they weren't mandated.

Fast forward a few months and suddenly they were necessary in certain places.

I've searched many times but sadly I've not been able to find that press conference.

The Science (TM) must have changed, magically.

I dont think it matters that much as long as the message gets across to the vulnerable that suffer with high ambient temperatures.

Considering a lot more people are vulnerable to extreme cold rather than extreme heat I assume we'll get similar messaging in winter with some guidance to put the heating on?

Probably.
WTF it has to do with Covid though, who knows.
Or is this now just a generic shouting at clouds thread?

No idea, however I assume this is your first time on an internet forum? They tend to go off topic at times - kind of comes with the territory.

It's a further example of the infantilisation we have had to endure since 2020. The idiotic response to the pandemic has firmly established the principle that we need to be told what to do at every turn for our own good.

It's been going on longer than that. I recall about 10 years ago a friend who worked for the local council sending me a list of Things To Do In Hot Weather during a warm summer. It included useful advice such as 'you will dehydrate faster in warm weather so if you feel thirsty, drink some water or other liquid'.

Agree it's all a bit infantile, but many people these days seem to want to be taken by the hand and told to breathe out after they have breathed in.

Quote of the day from someone replying to a Facebook friend's post about a positive test (she was always an attention seeking drama queen herself)

"My friend just got COVID for the 2nd time in 4 months. So much for natural immunity".

This is in the States so I'm guessing they were multi jabbed

In other news, the plastic screens at the checkouts in my local Tesco have finally been removed. However, this has prompted a couple of the checkout operators to don their face masks - the usual thin paper ones that do eff all, much like those screens. Oh well, their choice.

It's surprising how much more airy and, well, normal the place feels without the screens.
