Its not going to be some bored teenager vandalising it, it takes some decent skill and equipment to fell a tree that size, so I would bet farmer/landowner has something to do with it

I always like these threads that start "Words Fail Me" - and then the OP proceeds to write a whole load of words about the issue smile

It's about time more protection is given to he UKs ancient, veteran and notable trees. Many don't carry any real protection at all and need protecting the same way as listed monuments or buildings.

What was the historical significance of this tree - apart from its obvious age?

Man, that's just properly disgusting. The idea someone took the time to think it through, get the equipment and go and do that? What the actual fk is wrong with people? Like seriously? We have no hope as a species do we.

I suppose there is little chance of catching who did it, so can only hope Karma arrives swiftly and they sit on the chainsaw they used while it's running.

Disease? Is a sycamore prone to some tree disease, looks healthy though judging by the cut face.

If it is healthy then it is vandalism, could it have been protected by TRO? Or does that only apply in built up area?

So how far is that tree from the road? Takes a bit of doing to chop that down and the equipment for it.

My first thought too. Too many people causing issues with their livestock, public parking cars and blocking access etc - the usual.

Its really accessible, there's a car park nearby and it's an easy walk to where it was along the Hadrians wall footpath. My initial though was landowner pissed at the tourism it causes, but remembering where it is (I've been there many years back) that doesn't stack up. It's not like it's causing a lot of traffic through a farm or something.

It's just going to be some semi pissed tt out for likes on a social media group or something I expect. The fact they knew what they were doing and had the tools isn't that unusual in the area.
