Empire stuff, do you mean? The world was an entirely different place then wasn't it?

For me, it's not really about men ruling everything though. It's about exclusivity, rather than being open to the best talent. I dont see how the former gets better results than the latter.

Anyway, he's quit the club now.
I think you could argue that we are currently further away from being open to the best talent than we have been in a hundred years.

The best talent is often no longer the driving force behind opportunity. Filling quotas often seems most important.
I disagree entirely.

Ha ! yes, the segregation would magically not matter then. As a bonus members could park anywhere with impunity.

Exactly. That's the point of the story. If the UK was doing brilliantly, it wouldnt be so much of an issue. But that's not the case and we should be looking at the various reasons why.
Well that doesn't make any sense. The UK was at its peak when men ruled everything.
Yeah, under Queen Victoria.

..oh , hang on...

Not quite grasping the intricacies of a constitutional monarchy within a parliamentary democracy? wobble

And also that what worked well 150 years ago might not be that relevant now.

News today stating they are now considering letting women join.

Is nothing sacred? Do we have nowhere left to hide???

How many ‘Ladies Only’ clubs hit the headlines and get demonised for being discriminating?

For some reason, a colleague and I had been discussing the “fuddy duddy” gentleman’s clubs in London (Pall Mall, etc) We’d seen them only on old films, etc. Colleague wondered if there were any similar clubs in Manchester , so he looked on line for ‘ gentlemen’s clubs in Manchester’. What a load of sleazy filth came up on the screen . Quickly deleted, to the best of our limited ability!

I would think that women only institutions must out number men only place by many, from the brownies/girl guides and to women business and private clubs,
I was a keen rower in my youth and Henley Royal Regatta at the time (early 80s) was a bastion of male rowing. It was only male events (VIIIs, iVs, Doubles, etc.). Women could become members but it was difficult unless one had rowed at the regatta.

The world changed and HRR would occasionally have invitational women's crews but the women wanted parity, so HRR allowed the creation of Henley Women's Regatta in 1988 to be held a few days before. In the intervening decades, HRR partially opened to women rowing in select competition and now has total parity - for every men's event, there is an equivalent women's race.

However, HWR still exists, so women get two events and men get one.

Three safe spaces.

1) Garage/workshop/shed
2) The loft
3) A 5 day test
