The senator’s story doesn’t, on the face of it, make any sense.

It looks like they thought they could run some sort of sting operation to identify other radicalised people the kid would have contact with online. Given the kids situation i suspect the person that came up with that idea wasn't too bright. Whole situation is terrible and who knows what the kids parents are thinking after going to the authorities for help.

With the surveillance technology and powers the Australian federal and state governments have they don't need to do that sort of thing. They'll already have literally everyone who has had electronic contact with everyone else for starters and, once approved, they can not only read but edit the communications. Then there's the access to the technology from the USA through Five Eyes, like the honey pot "Anom" phones (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/sep/11/inside-story-most-daring-surveillance-sting-in-history).
