Michaela School - court case
Discussion
What do people expect legal aid to do? Judge the case before it is tried? Whether you agree with the case or not (I don’t, having read the judgment) people still have a right to legal representation. You can’t have a system where only those who can afford it can access the legal system. It’s not broken just because you don’t agree or because it was lost. If it had no merit it would have not got as far as it did. Clearly the case had a legal basis, even if it was eventually found the school was acting legally, as it got to a full court hearing.

Bugger me, couldn't get legal aid when the ex stopped me seeing my child but they can have 150k to fight when they knew all along there was a prayer ban before they enrolled.
I think the legal aid angle is because of the much wider repercussions of the decision of the judges. This decision affects schools up and down the land and sets a precedent for schools going forward so maybe that’s why legal aid was granted? Being a test case will often attract legal aid as everyone from the state to the individual seeks clarification on the law.
For anyone unfamiliar with the full circumstances Katharine Birbalsingh gives a comprehensive description of events in her interview with Triggernometry
.
The issue under discussion here is pretty much fully covered by the half way point but the remainder of the interview is also quite interesting...

Why on earth would you want the child expelled?
Because her family are 'trouble' by the sounds of it. Let them go play trouble elsewhere, or maybe take their child to a faith school if that is so important to them.lord trumpton said:

I suspect it's this. I don't know of any muslim parents that would go to this extent and take a school to court over a prayer ban during school hours. Move your kids to another school if you don't like their policies on being fully secular.
Indeed. It's bonkers. if religious education was that important to them there are plenty of islamic schools around.Countdown said:

I tend to agree with the point about send your kids to another school if you don't like Michaela especially given it sounds like those were the rules when the child started there so it's not exactly an unknown or a change of school policy.I'm not quite comfortable with the idea of expel the kid for the "sins of the parents" though.
