I take it you hail from the South Jim?

If so you must be one of the few people I was on about. I've driven through Texas and stayed there a couple of times in Amarillo, Austin and San Antonio. Austin had some surprisingly good "culture" and things to see n do. Similarly San Antonio from what I've seen would appear to be nice place to live. I'll also be driving along the south again from Savannah to San Diego in 2 weeks so I would say I've more experience of the American South than most Brits or Americans have. Unfortunately some of that experience involved meeting and talking to some of the stereotypes I mentioned earlier.

Their ignorance was mind blowing and only matched by their "state pride" for all things Texan. Their reverence for "Dubya" (George "W" Bush for anyone who didn't know) was kind of alarming, either I was completely outclassed intellectually and suckered into some super subtle mind game of theirs or unfortunate enough to meet a poor demographic representation of Texas...

I don't doubt for a second there are intelligent, educated, cultured types living in Texas. I have a couple of friends who fit into that category. However from what I've seen they would appear to be a minority against the stereo type I mentioned in a previous post.

I do. I have a tooth from a Megalodon - over 3 million years old. It's awesome.
Must be a bugger to brush though. What does your dentist think?
It was a British Megalodon....it didn't brush! biggrin

So you are sticking with the statement that some may be intelligent, but most of the 24,000,000 Texans fit your stereotype and are ignorant, stupid, etc.? Brilliant. I assume, and hope, that you are very young.

Tinman & Jimbeaux

Kudos to you, Jimbeaux for having enough intelligence to at least question why someone would take a myopic & jaded view of Texas. I state that for the record I haven't encountered the best and brightest the South and Texas have to offer. What I am saying is that from my limited experience I have been somewhat disappointed with what I've experienced thus far. Hence I've formed a rather dim and myopic view of the south. Will I change my views to appease people. No, its my opinion no matter how malformed or jaded it seems and I'm entitled to it. Is it likely to change? Probably for the better since I'm off to a wedding for a week in Austin this October so I'll keep my mind open and see what happens.

On the flip side...

Is California a bastion of perfection, radiating with intellect, art, culture, history, social enlightenment and enterprise with buffed boffins on the beaches... err no. Its chock full of its own social problems and is not as progressive as I previously thought (the whole prop 8 thing).

Tinman, I'm not going to engage in a duel of wits with what clearly appears to be an unarmed man.

Best of luck to you.

Fine. May I suggest that in the future you subsidize your statements with such caveats as you have above before offering them originally as bare-boned ignorance.
May I further suggest that Tinman was not being dimwitted but was merely countering with a statement infused with the same intelligence you offered him in the framing of your original offering. Quid pro quo....remember that for your future law career. wink

I suppose living in such a young country that's grown so fast makes you question how anything can be more than 10,000 years old.

Unless your country is younger than the oldest person you know I think it makes bugger all difference when your country nominally started to exist.

The UK for example isn't really that much older than the US in it's current form, the Houses of Parliament are actually newer than the capitol build in Washington DC and very few of our institutions bar the monarchy are much older than their American equivalents. Since about 1880 or so we have been pretty much pacing them in social and technological stakes, so change hasn't been happening at a very much different rate in either country,

Creationists.... are idiots, end of

I'm an expat but I am spending more time in the south, and I already tire of people like you. You hang onto a stereotype that largely doesn't exist because it suits your purposes; to feel smug and superior. You will happily discount many of the qualities of people in the south to fuel your arrogance.

So Texans want to vote for alternatives, this is what is called democracy at work. Deride democracy at your peril. Ah yes, many people in the US don't like the Dumfkistans voting because they are so stupid apparently.

And lets not forget that it was the Peoples Republic of California that voted against gay marriages lol.

Tinman: You sound okay after all, wink not that my vaunted and warped opinion matters to either of you but my thanks to both of you for making a dull post on PH a little more interesting for me than the usual MX5, OXO Tower banter.
