It's been recently shut to those in the building trades.

An IT technician at work was refused for IT, but got in on his Scuba Diving Intructors' qualification!

Don't know about skilled workers but they certainly don't have a shortage of bugs & creepy crawley things which is good enough reason for me never wanting to go. boxedin

Depends on what industry. There's a list on the immigration website I believe

But yeah, cutting down that's for sure.

Exactly. It changes depending on what they need at the time.

Correct.

My cousins have recently been refused visas/permission to go to Perth.

He's a plasterer.
She's a miwife.

I'm led to believe the rules regarding pensioners retiring to Oz have just be tightened again too.

They've recently elected a Labour government though haven't they? I'd expect to see people coming back in a few years time I think. Perhaps not to the UK but maybe to Europe.

I work in corporate services, specifically employee benefits and super advice and the hiring market has pretty much ground to a halt. Highly educated AND experienced are sought after but it certainly isn't the job goldmine it was. Lots have stopped recruiting and also not using consultants.

Everything has slowed down, as it has here really. I think they are tightening the visa rules again as they just don't need as many people, especially in the financial/IT areas.

Fortunately my visa was processed 2 years ago biggrin

Still not made my way over yet though frown

Did I hear they've dropped the maximum age for a work visa from 45 to 30?

Or did I make that up?

Yes, we did that just after receiving them, so I'm stampedup and ready to enter, just got to get a job out there before 2012 - and then pop back for the Olympics!

The total nuber of visa's for 08-09 still stands at 178,000 or thereabouts. Perth still seems to be the most bouyant in my fiend (fitter), but ALOT of competition mw with so many miners out of work. The wages are creeping down as oversupply of people for the amount of jobs.
Eastern states have been hit harder for longer, WA was sheilded for a long time. Seems funny to think in all the papers 6 months ago, this mining BOOM was gonna last another 10 years. global economy is a fickle thing indeed
