It's a huge embarrassment that the French and Americans can take these pirates out, yet we know we'd just give them a flat in Southwark without even trying to use force.

HMS Once-Proud: Please give back our boat/sailors, and we'll fly you back business class to London, give you a flat and enough benefits so you won't have to work for the rest of your lives.
Somali Pirates: Hmmmm, seems like a good deal...
They have been taken out. Are you referring to it taking too long?
Jimbeaux, this is pro the American action and firmly anti what the UK response would be.

Stop being so defensive wink

No worries, I got that; I simply thought you might have slept through and missed the resolution part....no defensiveness here. smile If anything, I am miffed at how long we took to to get it done.

1 on the stern 1 on the bow 2 each side.. When those peperami stick insects get within range cut the fkers to bits..

Maritime law coupled with the fact that in some cases the Pirates are very well armed.........the resulting fire fight would cause more damage etc etc etc, supprised that any ship goes within range without some sort of armed escort ala WW2 convoys

During the war both sides operated ‘Armed Merchantmen’ ships. Does current maritime law only permit these in wartime?

If we are hampered by the law whilst the pirates are able to ignore the law then perhaps it’s time to declare war on the pirates and make it open season on them.

The convoy idea is sound as a military principle. Concentration of our force and compelling the enemy to encounter our warships in order to achieve their goals, versus our forces dispersed in an attempt to encounter an enemy that is avoiding our navy.

However, the pirates are free to suspend operations until the naval forces have spent the budget, or are required elsewhere. In addition, the targets are ships of all nationalities. In wartime, the authorities can compel all friendly ships to sail in convoy. We cannot compel all nationalities to join convoys. The pirates would simply attack lone shipping.

We cannot simply attack any passing speedboat in the area. We need to bring the pirates to battle with our forces. The only way to do that is to use something like a Q ship. Then when they attack, the victim is a naval vessel and not bound by any civilian maritime law to be unarmed.

James here:

What is international maritime law when in international waters. If you are under attack or about to be can you shoot people? would make sense...

THE Royal Navy, once the scourge of brigands on the high seas, has been told by the Foreign Office not to detain pirates because doing so may breach their human rights.

Warships patrolling pirate-infested waters, such as those off Somalia, have been warned that there is also a risk that captured pirates could claim asylum in Britain.

The Foreign Office has advised that pirates sent back to Somalia could have their human rights breached because, under Islamic law, they face beheading for murder or having a hand chopped off for theft.
I really should laugh. What happened to being a man and taking the consequences of your own actions?

Human Rights. A good idea taken way too far
