It's all very surreal.
"The Taliban commander who spoke to NBC News directly said Bergdahl was given a traditional Afghan turban as a parting gift before his release.
"It is war in which they kill us and we kill them, but we did whatever we could to make him happy and return with good memories," he said."

The father seems to be some kind of anti-Guantanamo and anti-war activist. I wonder if those are his genuine views or if he just adopted that persona to help free his son? After all, he said he grew his beard and learned the local Pashtu language in order to try and help his son.

He also tweeted the following - in response to someone saying the Afghan elections are a farce and a face saving exercise for America:
[i]Agree! "Democracy" is a cult in the West. I think most of afgs see law in terms of sharia not secular democracy, man centric laws

Think this is going to go bad big time for the Obama administration. Even mad magazine are on his back.

Seems a lot of people in the us think Obama wanted a nobody left behind arnt I great moment to divert from some recent bad press but it's blowing up. The bloke is a deserter who " hates "America he left on purpose and people died looking for him.
According to my American friends in the military this is going to bite somebody on the bottom in a big way as nobody is going to come out of it looking good. Apparently it's common knowledge that he deserted and the fact other soldiers died trying to rescue him means that he will have to face a UCMJ court. Promoting him in his absence is not appreciated either when the usual punishment for desertion is removal of rank and a dishonourable discharge.
Edit: to say he's hated in the US military would be a huge understatement.

Washington (CNN)The U.S. military has charged Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl with one count each of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
Bergdahl left his post in Afghanistan before being captured and held captive for five years. For that, he faces charges that carry a maximum penalty of life in a military prison, and he could also have to forfeit pay and be stripped for his rank, Army Col. Daniel King said as he announced the charges.
Bergdahl now faces a military procedure similar to a grand jury deciding whether charges are appropriate, King said. Then, he could face court martial proceedings.
The decision comes nearly a year after Bergdahl returned to the United States as part of a prisoner exchange and since the Army began a formal investigation into his disappearance from his unit in eastern Afghanistan in June 2009.

The fate of Bowe Bergdahl — the Army sergeant who pleaded guilty to endangering his comrades by leaving his post in 2009 in Afghanistan — now rests in the hands of a judge. A sentencing hearing for Bergdahl starts Monday at Fort Bragg and is expected to feature dramatic testimony about soldiers and a Navy SEAL badly hurt while they searched for the missing Bergdahl, who was held captive for five years by Taliban allies after leaving his post. Bergdahl faces up to life in prison on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy after pleading guilty to the charges last week.
