2016 Olympics - Obama Bombed Out
Discussion
OK, the nation's news were all abuzz today concerning the Olympic Committee's vote. Chicago was in the running for the 2016 Summer games, along with Tokyo, Madrid, Rio and others. Obama was in Copenhagen telling them why they should choose Chicago. Apprarently he is not an olympic salesman because Chicago and Tokyo were tossed out in the first round of voting. Rio won.
Is it me or has hosting an Olympics become as much a financial liability as a bonanza? Perhaps it is for the best. Nations like Rio probably have far more to gain by getting the nod; good luck to them.
It doesn't matter, because the Mayan calender has the world cashing in on 2012 anyway.

It is a collossal waste of money; largely ceremony, bribes, and back-slapping. Only one in my lifetime (Aus) has costed 'in'. The Greeks estimated that they'd be paying for theirs for the next 200 years, and the 'legacy' of their games is a fenced off ruin and you get guns pointed at you if you try to go near it. Ours is likely to be the same. Not that you'd notice, given where it is being held.bonsai said:
I thought it was interesting, the presumption that many Chicagoans had that it was theirs for the taking. I find there is very much a sense of entitlement with Americans and the USA as a whole - that anything they enter they should win, and it's an enormous surprise when they fail.
I found that faux-emotional gushing spouted on the podium by Michelle Obama distasteful and smacking of arrogance. The awfulness of that alone should have been enough to preclude Chicago.bonsai said:

That is how we feel and the reason we do "win" so much. Positive attitude my friend, try it sometime. In this case, however, Chicago thought their favorite foster child Obama is the savior; they have simply shocked themselves.Edited by Jimbeaux on Saturday 3rd October 15:03
That sorry spiel by the Obamas came across as some soppy crap. Maybe American's cried onto their bagels watching it, but the rest of the world was puking up.
Why would Michelle saying "I would really like it for the Olympics to come to my home town" convince anyone to host it there? It's as if she expected everyone to think "oh, lets make Michelle Obama happy, lets host it in her home town... lets make her dreams come true"
edit: woah, that sounds pretty ranty. I guess it is

Are you all entirley sure the US wanted the Olympics? He may have sounded like he wanted it but behind the scenes might haver told them to do one.
The games have always been a massive loss and cost tax payers millions.
I seem to remember contrary to popular belief even the LA one didn't make money and thats before you factor in they didn't need to build any stadia, it was already there. Security and things like that were never factored in to the costs either IIRC.

Had Chicago won, the games would have been held during Obama's last year of a second term.
IMO, that's why he went for it.
Interestingly, the Daily Show showed him replying to a question directly asking him whether he would go to Copenhagen to support the bid. He said that he would not be attending the vote as the health Bill was too important to leave for even a couple of days.
Some Presidential staff heads will surely roll in the next week or so.
Apparently, Chicago's bid was seen to be weak, and self satisfied. As if they expected the Games to be handed to them just because they deigned to bid for them.
That's why they came last.

I can't help feeling that had Chicago won, you would be on here posting that America won despite that incompetent fool Obama. As you lost it is because of that incompetent fool Obama.
To be honest you are getting a little repetitive in your attempts to 'educate' the PH massive to your opinion. We didn't vote for him, so give it an occassional rest please.

I believe the only olympics we made money on was the one Mitt Romney was brought in to save; and he did.The games have always been a massive loss and cost tax payers millions.

The Obamas, and especially their inner circle, are genuinely arrogant. IMO, that's why he went for it.
