That's pretty much been the policy for years.
That's happened to me more than a few times, how actually does it help them?
Saves time.

It might not seem much but writing out a card and plonking it through the door is faster than ringing the bell, waiting for the homeowner to get out of bed, come down to the door, open it, take package, sign paperwork and go.

Like I said, a small difference but over several deliveries it adds up....

The Postie doesnt have to carry the package around with them... as they pre write the cards in the sorting office... They dont have to wait for you to answer door..

Standard policy (informal) all over the place.
Had this happen to me a few weeks ago, was in waiting for my new company phone, postie arrived, put a red card through the door, and moved on to the next house, I went out and said I was in could I have my package only to be told that its in the sorting office. I asked him why, as he had just put a card through the door saying I wasnt in, he just shrugged his shoulders and walked off.

The sooner there dispanded the better, as for the striking I was listing to the news and the union rep was caliming that the public are behind them confused, I can only assume he was talking about family and friends who work for RM

fk all...which is presumably why amazon chose to deliver to me via them. I did wonder why I had received it via them instead of RM.

So I guess lots more people will be receiving missed delivery cards from Citylink.
Amazon have used City for a long time. Its not a new thing.
Oh, didn't realise that......all my amazon stuff has come in the post before now. Everyday is a school day...thanks!
They have used City for some things but the difference is that they have now moved the big contract from RM to HDN. I received a book yesterday and it was delivered by HDN. It was 720 pages though and heavy. Presumably they are still using RM for small items like paperbacks and cd's or has that gone too.

I received 2x small lightweight paperbacks this morning. One was HDN and one was RM ! The deliverer used seems to depend not only on what the item is, but what warehouse it comes from. I'm sad Amazon have chucked RM in, as our postie is great. Once again the sciving minority in RM spoil it for the honest hard workers.

Article says the contract is for items over 500 grams, so I guess the small stuff will still be RM.

The last signed for parcel I had turn up at home the postie arrived at quarter to six in the evening on a weekday. I was delighted as I was expecting a trip to the sorting office for a missed delivery - he said he tried to do early evening deliveries of packages as people tended to be at home.

Do couriers do that? (I know that they don't.)

In fairness to the Posties mine is brilliant and so was her predecessor. She always delivers the parcels and knows to come up the drive and round to the back door if she has one as I work at the back of the house and don't hear the front door. She even brings treats for my dogs! I think most of the ordinary postmen do a great job for crap money.

I knew RM would go to pot as soon as it was announced that Crozier had been appointed. And it has. This is the man who gave us Sven FFS. It was bound to end in tears.

Royal Mail is better for parcels because if you miss a delivery you can at least go and pick it up from the sorting office.

With Home Delivery Network you have wait in as they don't have any depots you can go to. Luckily I get stuff delivered to work now but lots of people don't have this option.

Do the unions not realise that if they carry on like this their members won't have any jobs to go to anyway as the Royal Mail will be bankrupt?

Actually loads of couriers do have flexible deliveries available now.

We have some texting the day the package is out for delivery so you know what time to expect the package.

Our posties are great too. Lots of parcels come to the house, usually someone working from home but often on a call. They know we're around and leave packages with notes, even signing for them sometimes. I tell them when we're going to be away so they know not to leave stuff. Naturally this would be much harder in a block or flats or a terrace with no privacy.

I can assure you that most posties don't do that either!

In my area they're all in the Wetherspoons by midday, deliveries finished or not.

What, you mean the second best ever England manager Sven?

It's hardly Crozier's fault, he's trying to modernise the RM which is badly needed, it's the workshy majority of the workers who think they entitled to a living and the unions who egg them on that are the problem. The management's hands are tied.

sttylink etc will be affected as well. You do know a lot of the deliveries are made by Royal Mail. Personally I abhor couriers. I rarely am in for deliveries from them as they never deliver when you are in. RM delivers parcels before we leave for work and our mail always includes any parcels when we are in. My experience with most of the competition suggests they couldn't get any where near the "service" that RM have. Depots are scattered far and wide and most rely on RM for many deliveries.

I also owen a mail order biz, and we spend 2-3k a week with Royal Mail. They are reliable generally.. but do everything in their power when they lose somethig to wriggle out of paying.
The extra traffic we move to Couriers in the event of a Strike will not ever be returning to RM.
Whilst I don't like the PO management I think they have been trying to sort out one hell of a mess in a much more competitive environment. Posties have had it their own way for a while, they are being pulled into shape and they don't like it. They will bugger the business up on their own if they continue to get stroppy and strike.Crosier, don't rate him he just seems to be an overpaid smoothie to me.
I guess it's just the same sort of situation that BA are in too.

The world has moved on, but both organisations are stuffed with employees from a different era who think the world owes them a living (and a huge pension).

I'm a big user of Amazon and to be fair to the Royal Mail have never really had a problem with their delivery service.
Likewise we use Amazon a lot.. and have NEVER had a problem with the RM delivery. If we're out they try next door, or otherwise card it and we collect from less than a mile down the road.

As for stty-stink... banghead you're lucky if you get a card "the driver says you were out and he carded it" - funny that, I was outside the front of the house ALL day cleaning the cars and there wasn't a single van that came near the property. wkers.

Even had a Postal Van write off the Motor Bike of one of the staff on saturday which was impressive.

All denied now of course. Shame CCTV and 11 witnesses saw it.

The only real difference for me is that the nearest Citylink office is 10 miles away, but is open till 8pm where as the sorting office at the bottom of the road suts at 1.30pm.
Think I must be a bit odd or very fortunate as we have no problems with either RM/Parcelforce or Citylink . . . . . DHL on the other hand are absolutley fking terrible in my area, not made any better by the local DHL office being 5 miles away as the crow flies, but 24miles by car as the bloody rive Mersey is in the way!
