he will certainly deserve one if he keeps going as he is but seems a bit soon to give him one now and wont help his efforts as he will come across as smug - how u can give one to the president of a country that is at war in at least 2 diff places is beyond me. might as well give it to bin laden as at least theres been no big terrorist hits this year!

who else is there though?

Before Jimbeaux and the other Beck disciples get here and start lambasting Obama for this lets remember he didn't ask for it. I agree that it does seem a bit premature but I believe that he is genuine in his efforts in this area and the Nobel judges chose him and that's not his fault.

I'd rather see him get it than fking Bono who was nominated one year.

Seems another stunt by the Obama PR web to me. Flagging popularity polls needing an injection. The reduction in nuclear warheads appears be a strategic strategy that suits the US as much as it benefits the global village. It saves money & resources keeping them in service, buy`s the administration a shade of credibility when waving the big stick to budding nuclear states ..but the US strike capability will largely remain unaffected.

The masssve dollar incentives used to essentially bribe the pakistan regime to engage the elements in tribal pakistan ...He was all for air strikes on a new front in pakistan before standing for President while in congress when even Hilary & McCain baulked at such action at that stage due to the protestations of the pakistan regime over breaches to their soverign territory.

His last speech left reporters questioning his aides as to the actual where-abouts of the terrorist network in Afghanistan to which they were informed that the remaining elements of any threat to US interests have, in effect, been chased into the tribal regions of pakistan. So where does that leave Afghanistan...A mopping up operation?

It`s under a dubious fraudulently elected leadership that has failed to make progress in tangible form except forming a porus ring of steel around Kabul by Karzai`s mercenaries with Nato/US bases eating up capital resources & personnel at a unpallatable rate.

The persistant tugging of Irans tail may also, in time, if the Iran thing escalates into a huge st sandwhich, nullify it`s significance.

He must have the most difficult job in the world though & ...it`s early days...coffee

At least it wasn't Blair.

This has definitely devalued the award though, turned it into a political thing.

Yasser Arafat won one too ..

The voting for this didn't happen recently either it happened ages ago so nothing he has done in the last few months (and what has he done anyway?) would have influenced it.

What a joke.

Joke, right?

Yet after Albert Gore, this was a predictable joke and so not as funny.

According to Sky news, nominations for the Nobel prize had to be recieved by 01/02/09, just 1 days after Obama had taken office. Candidates would be assesed on what they had achieved up to that time. Which in Obamas case was feck all.
You could argue that persuading a nation with a long history of racial tension where racial segregation only ended fairly recently to elect a black man President is a pretty good achievement........

Surely just the mere presence of the Messiah in the Oval office will bring about world peace confused

You could, but you'd probably lose the argument smile

He still hasn't done enough to warrant this, but as we've seen these awards seem to be increasingly political in terms of the decision-making as inevitably there will be a significant political presence in the recipients for this particular prize anyway.

No other worthy alternative?.

I could understand if he had served his time and made "a difference", but not less than a year in the job!!!

I must admit I cant really think of any world leader, statesman or woman at present who would be worthy.
Morgan Changari, (or however it is spelt), the allegedly joint leader of Zimbabwai?
Good Shout - certainly would have put Robert's nose out.

A much better choice than a greenhorn Obambi.

Too soon, and probably dictates to him what he should do.

If the PH's had to choose someone from the PH community, who would be favourite - Garlick? smile

Interestingly BBC News 24 just reported that Obamas aides woke him a couple of hours ago to give him the news and had to reassure him that it wasn't a wind up! Clearly this is as unexpected to him and to them as it is to everyone else.

It seems that the Nobel committee have given the award as encouragement for him to press on with his plans rather than for a job done. He may privately be cursing rather than thanking them..........
