Quite interesting the way our man's escapades along 'The Wilmslow Bypass' made the national news; I guess because of the scale of the fraud and the fact a conviction was brought.

However, this has been going on for years and if the current (ABI claimed) £44/year/average policy contribution to cover these losses is correct, we've all been suffering accordingly.

A very good chum of mine runs a local recovery biz and deals with most of our local incidents; the reality of his experience in this area is startling insofar as the breadth and depth of endemic, socio-economic criminality is concerned.

It comes on the same day that we are told the population is spiralling up at 400,000 bods/year - like it's something that has just happened over night - like all those interminable traffic jams and the fact that you can't swing a cat in Albion anymore are somehow sudden restrictions just crept up on us...

yes spot-on

Police in ??????? have set up a new roads policing unit after it emerged the city has the highest number of uninsured vehicles on the UK's roads.

Only because Slough isn't a city...and the chances of a cathedral being built in Slough now are...slim, to say the least.

For whatever reason, over the past 6 months it does seem that observation of a red traffic light signal in the part of Slough I am blessed to inhabit during the day seems to have become an optional exercise.

Last week the road outside the office was shut, hordes of police and fire crew about, and flames leaping into the air from the side of the road. I'd assumed that the inevitable had happened, and the local security forces had been attacked with an IED, but it turns out BT had cut through a gas main with a digger.
Slough does have the worst of all worlds.
The way a lot of people drive in Slough, I doubt that they have a license, let alone insurance.

I live and work in Slough btw (and it does have some nice places with rather large expensive houses in nice areas... that I don't live in unfortunately) and I thank God every day I don't get killed on my cycle to and from work.

The local police should do more roadside checks in Slough. Every time they do, they catch a lot of motorists without insurance or with tyres that wouldn't look out of place on a racing car.

I guessed either Leicester or Bradford......................

Bradford's 'Ring of Steel' did make me chuckle though.

I may be wrong, but my perception of the penalties for driving without insurance seem very lenient. What deterent is a £200 fine when to stay legal might cost many times that?

The general acceptance that owning a car and driving are somehow 'a right' needs to change too. The fella quoted in the article says...

"My car cost £500 and to get it insured costs £2,000, so why bother?

"If I get stopped what can the police do? Take me to court where I will get fined get fined or take my car off me? Either way its still cheaper for me not to have any car tax, I am breaking the law but what can I do?"

Walk? Cycle? Bus? Train?

The way the law and media could (and should) be deterring uninsured drivers is by ensuring that offenders who cause damage and injury to other people receive the very harshest jail terms possible and that the profile of such cases are raised to highlight the potential downsides. At the moment, prosecution for uninsured losses is just not on the radar.

Is it me or have we been told for the past few years "the net is closing on uninsured drivers", but it isn't really if this article is true. Unless of course 3 out of 4 drivers used to be uninsured in Bradford scratchchin

In Ireland you're required to display a valid insurance disc next to your tax disc. Of course, something as simple as that would just be sily to implement here....

Combine that with the "Insallah" process of driving that some Muslims deploy - Insallah means, "if God wills it" in Arabic and is oft muttered in the Middle East by drivers blindly hooning through junctions, 'hoping' it'll all work out okay - and you have a fairly clear picture of the risks here.

Not sure he'd care about that. And if he's fined, he will pay £1 a month out of his benefits. (Ok, ok, it's a big assumption but...)

Coming around a large roundabout near Heathrow a few years ago, very disturbed to see a car reversing around the other way towards me. Seems the person driving it had missed their turnoff to (slough direction) and didnt think going back around the roundabout was a good idea.

This is where the lefty loons have gone wrong with the Car Scrappage Scheme.

Don’t pay people to get rid of an old banger, simply stop every single un-insured car, wait 7 days for owner to prove it is not a clerical error and then crush the car and ban the driver for a year. Bish bosh. Job done.

It’s environmentally friendly as these will mostly be old cars. They probably won’t be in good nick so pumping out toxics everywhere, the driver can’t afford insurance so you are protecting him from himself and you are meeting your basic obligations to legitimate tax payers.

I reckon that within 5 years you would have scrapped almost every old car in the UK.

fking foreigners! Cluttering our roads.

I was on the freeway in San Fransico about ten years ago. There was this foreign nutter in a rented Lexus LS400 doing about 80 to 90 mph, weaving through the morning traffic, one land to the next, overtaking like a tt.

It was me, I was late for my flight.getmecoat

I got it first time as well, the answer to your question is think of the highest concentration of asians that is where the dodgyness occurs, simple facts and statistics.........not racism. After all, all stereotypes have at least a basis in facts.

personally, I would rather it wasn't such a straightforward correlation, but look at the list and it screams out at you.
