We should have a bet. I'd be willing to wager a tenner that 2010 has a higher average global temperature than 2009. Possibly we could 'double or nothing' at the end of the year. I say UAH satellite data should be the guide.
What do you base your confidence on Hairy? Current El Nino? But I'll accept the tenner bet with the condition of a double double or quits for 2011, so if I lose 2010 but win 2011 you owe me a tenner. If you win 2010 and 2011 I owe you 30. Ok?
Sounds good to me. I'll bookmark this thread and we can revive it in a year!
ooh a bet! january off to a flier looking very warm...

So what? This is fk all significance or relevance to ground temps...

It's the UAH satellite output - the designated metric for the bet.

Stuck: This hungry fox ended up a victim of the sub-zero temperatures when it chased a duck across an ice-covered lake - and froze to death. The duck returned to the scene to observe his fallen foe

January Warm where the fk does KP live Bondi Frigging beach?

He Clearly is NOT in the UK if he reckons that any data can be persuasible regarding warmth cos he would just walk outside (or in Spain USA, Peru, South Korea, India, Germany, Poland, China.............you get the point right) smile
walk outside to assess global temps, or look at a map, tricky one...

OOO Look something from the met office, recently criticised themselves for massaging data by the Russian government yep going to believe ANYTHING that comes via them huh!

However I am sure TB will be along presently to spend more time on this bks smile

Why have the hot bits been stretched, plunky..? Tricky one.

Just been talking to someone back from Florida today. Been freezing their nuts off for two weeks...

Edit...why is Canada hotter than Australia...?

It's change in temperature isn't it?

You don't honestly believe the hottest temperature on Earth is 10degC and the coldest -10degC either do you?

By Jove, sir, I am undone. I shall read the numbers next time you put forth your musings.

?

Florida is also cold on the map - the pan-handle is in the blue. OTOH vancouver has been quite warm but shows cold on the map, I'm guessing the res isn't very fine.

why is Canada hotter than Australia...?

It isn't. These are temperature +/- anomalies from a baseline average

I may be misreading it but how can there be such an extreme temp difference over such a short distance ie the caucuses(+10c) to central russia (-10c)

Ho hum, KP trots out the statistically insigificant 1961-1990 temperature anomaly graph... rolleyes

KP I'm all ears... tell me why 1961-1990 is chosen? Why not 1900-2008? Wouldn't it show what you wanted it to show?

Oh yes, and while you're at it, which part of the data are fatally compromised are you having difficulty with?

Such beautiful reasoning, such iron-clad arguments, such wonderful rhetoric. I think I can safely speak on behalf of all scientists when I say I dont suppose it matters too much which particular fate you undergo.

Without crunching the numbers I couldn't say what difference using 1900-2008 average would make.

Intuitively I would have thought the baseline would be lower as you would be including an additional 61 mostly cooler data points (1900 - 1960) and only 18 warmer data points (1991 - 2008) and so the map would look warmer.
