Do you have any direct experience of working in the public sector?
Yes lots. 7 yrs public sector, 13 years private sector, 4 years charity and 6 years self employed. Next question.
But as you haven't actually contributed to the thread previously, that's kind of irrelevant isn't it?
Was just wondering who the question was aimed at.

Another oddity of the Public Sector, if you are hopeless at your job you get promoted away from that department, whereas if you are any good they keep you down as you're the only one doing the bloody work.

Climbe case Social Worker got promoted after the child in her care died to get her out of the way.

High time for a raft of sackings across most of the Public Sector let alone redundancies, gross incompetence should mean no redundancy or pension. But then of course watch them strike, but with a lot of departments we’ll not notice anything different, so let em strike and then lock up the offices and send them all a P45.

Two stories I will post that they are factual and make my p1ss boil..

Case 1..

Bloke joins CS and spends 5 years filling VAT printers with paper, not the most demanding job.. gets paid 35k that was 10 years ago.. and stf allowances... he lives 100 yards from work yet is able to get taxis etc after dark.. Had average of 70 sick days whilst there.

He gets moved to desk job in London on about 40k... his role... to prepare visitor packs for his department..... thats it really... he brags in once year he put 40 odd packs together...
Hmm....to get £35-£40K in the CS now, never mind 10 years ago, you'd have to be a pretty high up grade. The manager of a Job Centre, for example, wouldn't be earning anything like that. So why would they grade the jobs you describe at such as a level as to pay those salaries?

Maybe there's a lot of billst there - I could say that at the moment I'm being paid £100K to post on PistonHeads.
I get paid more than that to post here...

You may do well on a certain BBC TV show then! I believe the figure you've given is the salary on offer and you'd also get to work for a happy go lucky smiling teddy bear of a boss!

yes

Then form a cahin gang out of them and get some bloody roads built.

They could chant while they are digging, bit like the american military

We were civil servants right
We worked for Gordon and we were ste
We buggered up everything we touched
Now we've blown it and got the push

We're on the road gang now we're back
Cos as civil servants we were crap
We said global warming was really true
Now we're covered in mud and we look like pooh

or something like that....

Mr Alan 'iPod won't last' Sugar you mean?

Re Chain Gangs, build a few super prisons; get inmates from current jails to do the simple labouring, 12hr days etc. So would be cheap. Say 10000 inmates in each out on places like Saddleworth Moor. Create jobs (esp in building sector), ease congestion in current jails

Jobs a good un

Feck all to do with Public Sector but it's snowing here; no doubt gritters will be out in June on triple time (well it is to do with public sector after all)

Unfortunately I can add to the PH rant...

Popped in to Hammersmith Hospital last week or the week before to visit Mum. Got the lift up having walked past two staff chewing the fat and 'chatting' each other up.

90 minutes later, left ward and hospital and got the lift back down; guess what?

Yep; still there chewing the fat and being cool frown

FFS.

BTW - Thank God that there are record spends being wasted on this st. (And this story is unfrotunately true!)

NHS is 4th biggest employer in the world !!

Don't begrudge a decent whack for nurses, doctors etc it's all the unnecessary admin crap that gets me. When folk say ring fencing Health I hope they mean healthcare professionals not admin types.

Visited my mummy too at Sharoe Green Hosp in Preston, there was a cardboard sick bowl there at 4pm that was there that same morning.

I get paid so much to post here I've employed someone else to do it for me, sadly I employed a very lazy person so my post count is low.

I employed a public sector person who deligated it out to a team, they called themselves public_sector on PH and as you can see if you look them up, they still havent done any work for me and its been 4years they say the go live for the first post will be 2012 or thereabouts... I suspect they are trying to outsource the work to china or something!!

Strange... So sometimes I post as myself and not my alter ego

Don't joke about that (to a civil servant)! They've already moved some IT support to India and, as much of the civil service becomes call centre based (hence the deteriorating service in HMRC etc) I'm sure there are many people who would like to transport the entire operation there.
