A lot of the Tory excesses were far worse but they had the brains to make sure what they did wasn't technically illegal. So they are just immoral grasping bds as opposed to criminal grasping bds. Doesn't really make me feel better somehow...

"We totally refute any charges that we have committed an offence and we will defend our position robustly," the statement said.

Id say falsely claiming for mortgage interest on a non existent mortgage is a pretty clear cut offence.

Bonkers - it'll cost an absolute fortune and they'll probably get off.

Ann Widdecombe was on the news yesterday saying there are FOUR enquiries going on into expenses and they've ended up arguing with each other.

Tory MPs always get involved in kinky/extra marital sex scandals.
Labour MPs always get involved in money scandals.
Lib Dem MPs always get involved in gay scandals. (Apart from Lembit Opik).

Probably a 95% accurate guide...

So no one is getting prosecuted for flipping their houses.

This is the biggest crime commited, it was against the rules. As the rules say the claim has to be moral.

I hope the new rules state that they will be given a set ammount for their rent in London. Nothing for their home, after all the rest of the world have to pay for their own home out of their salary.

Why? I suspect you take the same approach when claiming your expenses and paying your taxes. Just inside 'technically legal' is the most rewarding place to be. smile

This reeks of a witch hunt. The whole expenses scandal has done since day one to my eyes. It's been used to stifle debate, cover up other stories etc. It's been a vent for people's frustrations at politicians other failures, and a good chance for everyone to indulge in some schadenfreude. I wonder how much money will be wasted on these trials and what will be sneaked past the media whilst this sideshow is going on.

good. then we can forego an expensive trial and move stright to burning at the stake. the trial of these people will detirmine if it was a witch hunt or not! i'm fairly certain claiming for a mortgage you don't have is fraud.

the current parliamentry system clearly attracts a very low level of applicant. if this whole thing prevents just one more morally bankrupt, sniveling, money grubbing loser from trying to run our country in future then it is worth it.

3 labour MP's issued a joint statement.

Why joint?

seems odd when they all have different expenses - all using the same, lame excuses I suppose? (not like 3 people in a gang have robbed somewhere, they are seperate robbers..

Falsely claiming for mortgage interest that doesn't exist is clearly dishonest, whereas claiming for a duck house that was within the rules (or signed off) is just taking the p1ss!
