Reading this, I have the vision of a bunch of students along the lines of Rik out of the Young Ones sitting around the kitchen table of some dingy flat in the early hours of the morning, coming up with great ways to solve the world's problems.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8513783.stm

The working week should be cut to 21 hours to help boost the economy and improve quality of life, a left-wing think tank has said

The foundation admitted people would earn less, but said they would have more time to carry out worthy tasks.

The foundation's policy director Andrew Simms added: "A cultural shift will throw up real challenges, but there could also be massive benefits for our economy, our quality of life and our planet.
"After all, hands up who wouldn't like a four day weekend?"

Yeah, man.

She said (on Radio 4's 'Today' this morning)that we have "galloping climate change" and that this proposal would offset it - obviously a woman of a high degree of insight!

So I get half a week back; and get my salary reduced by half.

This is a brilliant idea; as it would allow me to get a part-time job to make the money required to make up my salary shortfall, to pay for my council tax, ever increasing fuel costs, insurance, food, and general cost of living thumbup

I've got a full time job but I spend most of my time posting on PH. Clearly I'm ahead of the trend!

Laziness, it's the future. smile

You are missing the point. We would all have so much time to be doing much more worthy things.

Like this for example one of the positions that one of their members holds: Head of Valuing What Matters.

On the one hand, it is good that we have people who think a little bit laterally about the drudges of every day life but this release is surely just done as a PR grabbing exercise, in which case well done them.

More time to carry out worthy tasks?

Surely productivity is the key to boost economy?

How do you get funding to set up these foundations? I want to set one up that does research into how the economy would boost if people did more work for the same money. I shall call this the "stating the obvious foundation".

Here you go - this is financial genius.

"The Just Bond
The Just Bond is a bond with a difference. It will give an interest rate of 0% and the bond cannot be redeemed. On financial performance alone, you might say the bond has nothing to recommend it. But by buying a Just Bond you will be helping to create a more sustainable future."

Sheer genius.

I am going to launch The Just An Orange Lambo Bond. You can make donations via Paypal. You will never get your money back but you can sleep in a worthy manner knowing that out there, somewhere in Surrey, is a 41 year old man driving a Lambo who is very grateful to you.

You can't put a price on that.

Have you seen the yield on US treasuries? When you take into account inflation they aren't much of a better bet.

But would that mean that council tax, petrol, insurance, mortgages, food, etc, etc, etc would all reduce by half too? I could guess what the answer is .... here's a clue ... "the opposite of yes"

It would make sense if we were starting from a clean sheet and everyone stuck to it. But when the cost of living is dictated by the current income, it would be impossible to survive on so few hours. And even if they did start with a clean sheet- the filthy industrious with their disgusting "work ethic" would end up earning more than everyone else by finding ways of doing more work, leading to a redistribution of wealth to those who worked more. Perish the thought.

No way man.

All that bad karma stuff run by the man would be gone. We would help each other and the world will survive on love.

You need to free your mind and let the earth energy just flow

MALVENES: [walks into office, sees E.T. sitting with his back to him, smoke rising everywhere] E.T.? What is the meaning of this? I've just received this memo. E.T.? In the one day since you've inherited Global Oil, you've managed to dispose of assets worth over 6 billion dollars!

What is this?

"All annual profits to be donated to the Brothers of the Soil commune in Wales, England? All petroleum and oil to be sold at a retail price of 2p a gallon? All oil wells to be given, tax free, to anyone really nice you can find?!"

What is this, E.T.? Some kind of sick joke?!

MALVENES: My God, E.T., what are you doing now?

E.T.: [throws some money out the window] Yeah. [turns back] Listen! This company's been doing some pretty heavy things over the years, right. And it's gotta start getting beautiful or this planet's heading for oblivion!

MALVENES: My God, you're right, E.T.! What am I doing wearing these businessman's clothes? I'd better take them off before I turn into a computer.

[Removes his jacket]

E.T.: [crawls under his desk] Yeah, yeah! Let's make a teepee out of the desk!

MALVENES: Let's be Indians! [sounds a war cry]

[Bells start ringing in the distance. The Secretary runs in, wearing an ndian headband.]

SECRETARY: Far out! Do you hear the bells, E.T.? They're dancing in the street and loving each other, and it's all thanks to you, E.T.!

E.T.: Yeah!

VYVYAN'S VOICE: Shut up, you bds!

Is that site a wind-up or what? If it is for real, where do they get their base funding from? I trust not from the taxes that I have paid.

What a fking bunch of loonies. that's the best I can say for them, though I am still not convinced it's for real.
