Economists urge swift action to reduce budget deficit

Mr Alistair Darling, an ex solicitor and Mr Gordon Brown, an ex politics lecturer know more about economics and finance than 20 of the UK's leading economists.

It baffles me when any government policy goes against expert advice. Not only do they go against it time and time again, their argument essentially boils down to "well we know better".

The same thing happens with drug policy, immigration policy, etc.

I know governments have their own agenda to work towards, but surely that should be in conjunction with expert advice??

Every single really successful person I've ever met, has had the ability and talent to delegate as and when they are out of their specialist area of expertise.

That winky refuses to do this is simply another reason why he shouldn’t have been let anywhere near the government of this country, I'm sure a somebody could knock up a sensible aptitude test to be a politician..............preferably one that ignores gender / sexuality / skin tone

They only tend to rely on expert advice when it matches their opinion/ideas.

It's very typical of a Labour person IMHO... Any view which agrees with their own is a good one, any which does not is flawed..

Or perhaps anyone who isn't very good at their job. It is, of course, a human trait, but in public office a trait that should be stopped.

That's exactly it, politicians should be good at choosing who to delegate tasks to, not to go over their heads and plough on regardless!

'Experts' - what an awful misnomer!

In the last 20 years those who are labelled, or have the audacity to call themselves 'experts', are usually nothing of the sort.

Probably hence why so many of the populace now say 'God save me from experts!'.

Quite right, who'd be stupid enough to listen, let alone pay for the advice from economists. Were in a such a hole because of their stupid Keynesian mumbo jumbo. A pox on their house!

i am an expert. Really. I have the letters and stuff to prove it.

Experts know what they are talking about on the specific issues that they have their expertism in.

It's the job of politicians to listen a range of experts, weigh up their points, and then make a judgement taking all the considerations into account.

the problem occurs when the politicians start to make politics one of their considerations...

Keynes is spinning in his grave. You cant blame Keynes, he wanted surpluses to be built up in the good times to be spent in the bad times. Something Winky didnt understand.
