Folks should also remember that he was no WWI General, 30 miles behind the front line. He was personally at risk, injured, and very nearly killed at least once. He was not asking his workers to take more risk than he took himself. It was just the (naive, not ruthless) way things were done then.

A genuinely remarkable man.
