You think they have no influence on the populace? In the North east it is probably one of the least 'Evangelical' states, and yet many people when I was in college, and my neighbours often agree with the likes of Pat Robertson, and their deluded ilk. Unfortunately the evangelical movement is strong in the US. Look at the coverage when Falwell died. Hitchens told it entirely as it was on Hannity and Colmes, much to Hannity's dismay, and disgust.

How much has Fox news spoken about Rev Wright, and his links to Obama? What about Falwell, and his links to the Bush admin.

Sorry, do you have anything to counter what I am saying, or are you just going to spouts essentially nothing? You don;t think Falwell had great influence with his 'Moral Majority' organisation? You don;t think that the Rev Wright issue is important? You don;t think that pat Robertson has influence? What exactly is it you object to?

"What exactly is it you object to?"

The very fact that you fail to comprehend the significance of the OP's post and continue to bleat on about some meaningless drivel sums it up.

Uh huh... And how do you come to that conclusion? What is it I am failing to comprehend? I am talking about the stuff I am because of the post MX7 made about the ridiculous statement made by a Bishop. Are you going to actually comment on what I wrote, or just talk white noise again?

Most people here take what those folks say in context and some politicians give them lip service. Trust me, policy is based upon either true pragmatism or political gain. I fear that certain Middle Eastern governments take it far more seriously. Note I said governments, not the whole of ME nations.

Is saying that women cause earthquakes any more ludicrous than thinking God exists? Or that the earth is 6,000 years old?
When one who says such things is in league with a small group that controls a country, then I think it is.

Absolutely.

Lets pursue the logic for further proof.

Gays cause flooding.

The Catholic church has long supported its priests who bumrape small boys.

Many Catholic countries are well watered, lush and green.

Alternatively my point could be that you can always find a fictional causal relationship between religious dogma and a real event because religious dogma is itself fictional.

My ludicrous assertions are to illustrate the real causal relationship.

People need to understand. They therefore formulate explanations for phenomena based on prior beliefs.

If you do this without the ability to test the hypothesis scientifically then you can create and propagate beliefs based upon faith, but with no basis in reality.

This is the foundations of all religious tradition.

The only difference between my fiction and those of traditional religion is that mine aren't cloaked in the mystery of time. Nor are they reinforced by cultural and social pressure.

Right then... i was with you until you started going on about religion. Anyway did you know the book & film 'Planet of the Apes' was based on a real event?

How about when the president of the United States talks about God blessing America?

I think both are nuts but if we are going to call out people for making ludicrous claims about earthquakes we should also call out people who say God exists.
No comparison IMO. "God bless" this or that has been uttered by every President and every PM throughout history. Whether they believe in God or not does not match up to a Cleric, possibly holding an official position, claiming that earthquakes are directly proportionate to slutiness is absurd. Keep trying to compare the two, we can do this all day long.

I bet there is freaky crap from certain Christian and Jewish sects. The difference seem to be just that.....one has to go looking for such things whereas with Islam, it seems to be readily available from primary sources.

The children killing and witchcraft part. The rest, honestly, seems spot on. hehe
