The article said:
But if he fails to produce valid insurance documents within a set time, the Modena convertible could be auctioned off, with West Yorkshire Police retaining any proceeds, or it could even be destroyed.
How stupid is that? Selling it at a police auction, and putting the money towards policing seems a lot more constructive.
The article is just quoting the legal options available. If it were a lump of junk then they would crush it than auction it.

In this case he or a member of the family will turn up with docs.

The simple fact is that I suspect it is much cheaper to not insure and pay the fines than to act legally.

Until they change the law so that the car is gone unless the driver can prove it was a clerical error within a suitable time period then nothing will change.

I'm sure plod knows who all the repeat offenders are and once they've blitzed them and disposed of every car that these people can lay their hands on the majority will have to give up driving. Or the actual owners of the lost cars will cut their heads off.

The full scale of Bradford’s car insurance problem was laid bare in 2008 when statistics revealed six in ten drivers in certain parts of the city were uninsured.

A postcode breakdown of uninsured vehicles, by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, estimated there to be 30,500 uninsured vehicles across the Bradford district.

Bloody hell!!!!

how does it work? if you're driving a 100k+ car and your insurance runs out and you forget to renew, honest mistake, can they really take the car and sell it? seems totally disproportionate for a simple mistake.

True enough. Sometimes they even send a strongly worded e-mail. But that's a last resort after they've called you a naughty boy and made you promise not to do it again.

Interesting how it is perfectly acceptable to positively discriminate for females, but not whiteys.

Not sure about that, but my plate is OO05 MJB and my insurance used 0005 MJB.

I was stopped by the police a couple of years ago for having no insurance and only by the skin of my teeth managed to drive away after a couple of hours of negotiation which ended with frantic phone calls not only to my broker, but also to Zurich direct as the police were on the verge of making me walk home! In fact the police were correct, I was not insured because the plate details were incorrect, although I thought I was. I hadn't noticed even though I carried a copy of the policy in the vehicle because on paper in small text the numbers/letters looked fine but a 'O' does look different to a 0 when you look closely.... This was also regardless of the fact I always simply don't say OO05, it's always O for orange, O for orange etc so I had assumed everything was OK.

I certainly now take even more care with my car documents!

I also don't believe everything I read in the papers wink

Its fairly easy to get insurance over the phone at the roadside providing you have a credit/debit card so would the police accept this?

Sure you may still get the 6 points but at least the car won't be seized.

Insurance can't be backdated though if bought there and then (by a legit company anyway)

Typo's are not unusual and they don't invalidate the cover.

I wonder if these examples of exotics, when sold on, come with FSH.

Any car in Bradford over a value of £40,000 should be stopped.

The owner should prove he has a licence, insurance, a right to be in the country and should also be able to prove just EXACTLY how he bought the car. If he says 'cash' then we need to know what business he has and exactly how much tax he has been paying.

This is what our country needs - much more tougher action and if they can't prove it then the car should be taken and auctioned off.
Are you sure about that? After 13 years of a Labour government we need even more powers to snoop and badger people and raise more revenue. Why on earth should you have to prove how you were able to buy a car?

I don't know Bradford as such but heres a view of where I was brought up.
Yes it's Dewsbury, and the "Moor" at that.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

Just go along there with a left hand pan.
BMW X5 and M3 conv?
Typical Council house residents now it seems frown

Have a pan around the Estate, it can be a eye opener.

Having been uninsured means you get points/fine.
Being uninsured NOW means you get the car taken off you.

Hence Sunny is right, buying over the phone while sat in the back of the plod car won't get you off a ticket, but will let you keep your car.

I had similar in London. Changed a plate and forgot to inform the insurance company.

Was pulled over by plod who were completely charming and happy about the whole thing. Was just advised to go home asap and inform my insurance company first thing in the morning.

I thought that was exactly how plod would and should act, but I suspect that all the red tape and legal crap is preventing normal people from working normally.
