MMR Doctor struck off
Discussion
Thank god, its taken years to get this far, but at last:

Dr Andrew Wakefield has been struck off by the GMC. Comments from the chair are along the lines of “irresponsible”, “misleading” and “dishonest”. Kind of says it all.
So, I wonder if this will draw a line under the whole MMR thing? Or will this nasty little man continue to peddle his 'tablets' to solve autism? I wonder. I fear that the damage and only time will solve this one...
What says the PH collective?

Should have happened long ago.

Dr Wakefield, 53, also “showed a callous disregard” for the suffering of children by taking blood samples from them at his son’s birthday party
What a great doctor. Everyone's a potential study subject, eh? Huge amounts of medical research goes on in this country which complies with ethical and scientific standards - he felt he was above this. When the public expresses horror at 'doctors who play god', it's Wakefield they should have in mind.Deva Link said:
Listened to Dr Wakefield being interviewed on R4 this morning and he sounded a complete arse.
Let me guess, was he wheeling out the 'its a conspiracy' line again? How the media and establishment are hounding out of a job because he blew the whistle? Hateful little man.
How odd, I must be the only person who thinks that there is no reason why you can't get three individual shots to be on the safe side... Can someone elaborate as to why this is such a problem?
And I may be paranoid, but I have no doubt that the establishment would take these kinds of steps to silence dissent, after all, last bloke who vocally disagreed with the Govt and was going to make them look silly went for a quiet walk in the woods.....

You can have all 3 but the mmr is cheaper, and I think is a longer series leaving children open to infection. The man is a lying charlatan.

As a father of an autistic child this guy caused me, for some years, to blame myself for allowing my son to have the MMR jab. I thought I`d ruined my sons and my familys life through this decision. 10 years on this news is tno real consolation. I hope his legs fall off.
My nephew is the same however from the off his parents never blamed mmr (not that I am criticising you remotely, the news was already out by the time of my nephewthat his 'evidence' was ste.Cvm....: D

So basically the main answer is that MMR is cheaper than three separate jabs.
I think that tells us all we need to know then.
Yes, that its a very good solution to a problem however you appear to be ignoring the other, equally if not more valid reasons. It also prevents other dangers to children (its no coincidence that the incidence of, I think, all 3 diseases have risen since this issue). H67, I realise its easy for me to say, not being directly affected, but to my mind his supporters are seeking someone or something to blameI think that tells us all we need to know then.

Not really. Yes it is cheaper, but the main reason is uptake, it is very hard to get parents to get their child to the doctors once, let alone 3 times.I think that tells us all we need to know then.
The 3 in one shot has no more risks than the 3 separate ones ( probably less, as less travelling), and gets the herd immunity up, which is badly needed since the good doctors intervention.
Measles is not a trivial disease, and is preventable.

The combined is a more sensible option anyway as individual jabs not only cause more discomfort to the child but expose them to more risk as there must be at least a four week gap between the individual jabs. I think that tells us all we need to know then.
The individual jabs are unlicensed and so have not had the rigorous testing of the licenced combined. ie you could be putting any old st in your child.
Finally, the combined mmr has been administered to over 500 million people worldwide and is recognised as one of THE safest vaccines out there.
The fact that it is the cheaper option is merely a bonus.
