The ignorance about fox behavior shown by the 'fox denial' posts is hilarious.

The assertion that it couldn't be a fox because a fox wouldn't just sit there assumes a fox behavior is constant throughout the year.

It isn't.

Foxes have cubs in the springtime. Then they take them out and teach them to hunt.

When a fox with cubs is confronted it will stand still or draw attention to itself.

While the crafty fox is keeping the attention of the threat focused on itself, the cubs are slipping away to safety.

Once the cubs are safe the vixen makes their escape.

If there's no chance of escape then they may fight to protect their offspring.

The attack happened at the time of year a vixen would have her cubs out.

That the parents didn't see any cubs suggests the fox is better at protecting its offspring than they are.
