Whilst I hate the constant H&S encroachment on UK life, I do have some sympathy on this one. Unless properly coached and ref'd partaking in a scrum - even at schoolboy level - can do you a lot of harm.

How much was spent to come up to the conclusion, that injuries occur during the tackle and scrum. Who would have thought that situations where bodies come in contact with each other could result in injury. ranting

Ban football then as it leads to fatness, shagging grannies, wife cheating and jug ears.

It is a stupid game; ball isn't spherical, you can only pass backwards and you get points for kicking it over the crossbar. Invented by sadistic fkwits with cauliflower ears and broken noses.

And here was I thinking that nothing bad ever happened in rugby - that the players were all angels and never hurt anyone.

I think there is a good case for playing 'touch' rugby when they are young. It would get more kids involved.

But I wouldn't agree with changing the game past 14 years old, we just need better coaching and referreeing to reduce the risks.

Train the teaching staff properly and there will be no problems. I played contact rugby since the age of 11 and it did me no harm rolleyes

Maybe we should ban drawing pins too, sometimes they end up on a chair and give schoolboys a little prick in the arse....good god, it doubles as paedophilia too....think of the children!

RFU insists on touch up to the age of 9; but (private) schools can do as they see fit, they're not RFU endorsed or RFU insured.

Actually, I think that's what happens if you let people get too good at football. rolleyes

No. On both counts. I just hated playing rugby at school. I mean ffs why would anyone with a modicum of intelligence like rolling around in the mud on a freezing winter's day with other kids jumping on them? Unless of course...

I thought that scrums were already not used in school rugby. Something to do with neck injuries, should a scrum collapse?

I went to school in the mid/late 90's and we had rugby with scrums, I have to say I wasn't a fan of them and I can see why people might raise this issue - esp as we were forced into doing it!

Why don't we just ban everything then????

Ban hockey, you might get hit with a stick.
Ban 100m hurdles, one might hit you on the shin.
Ban the high jump in case you fall off the pad.
Ban the shot put in case you drop it on your foot.

And so the list goes on....

If you teach and supervise sport properly there are very few problems, that goes for rugby just as much as any sport.

Personally I absolutely love watching rugby and enjoyed playing it as a kid. That said, we were properly reffed and supervised. Hire proper sports teachers and the problem would disappear.
