They found a huge one in the house eight doors up the road from me - rumour has it that the Plod Copper was motoring past one evening with the I/R on looking for some villain, and the place was lit up like a nuclear explosion. smile

Usually one of two things;

a) Either someone that worked with them who they've fell out with has grassed them up

b) Their electricity usage was high enough it aroused suspicion from their electric provider and they tipped off the place.

c) the heat it all generates - even underground.

I know the police regularly do thermal imaging from above in urban areas but do they scour the countryside looking for cannabis farms too?

Well as per the one up the road from me - the chopper only has to be in the vicinity looking for something else with the I/R and the great big glowing patch of ground by the farm might be noted.

Although, muck heaps generate a enough heat to be seen on thermal image, so it might not be.

Don't panic. They've setup a helpline: 0800 CANNABIS and press the hash key.

What a complete waste of public resources, suppressing farming that needs no subsidy.

Legalise it and watch the VAT roll in.

They usually only tip off plod if the growers are bypassing the meter and stealing it. Afterall, they want to make money from people using electricity!

There are no MAGIC tools that can see through walls. Provided that the heat is insulated from heating up the fabric of the building or the earth in this case, then there is no way for it to be seen from IR imaging.

I would imagine that the earth was insulative enough to mask the heat signature from this grow. This was a case of "loose lips"

Think about it, if IR could see hot lamps through cool brickwork it could also see you and your family walking around the room.

The hot air has to escape somehow, I'm no botanist but I don't think you can grow plants in an air-tight container for very long.

indeed but hot air wont look terribly suspicious considering every hot water system I know of has a chimney! So innocent houses have hot air outlets, how do you tell the difference? There's a load of bks talked about growing cannabis, my mate got busted doing it, got grassed up, not that the police would admit it, they were trying to tell him that the smell gave him away! He knows who grassed him up as they admitted it to him!

Mark my words, 99% of growrooms wont be visible to an IR camera.

Oh sure, because a body emitting 50W and moving around is the same as a set of 40 500W grow lamps running 24 hours a day. Not that heat is conducted or anything. No matter how well insulated it is, heat has to get out eventually. 20kW of energy in must be matched by 20kW out or the enclosed temperature would rise until it started to bake the crops and eventually flash over.

I think people underestimate how good the IR cameras are.

FLIR cameras are good, but not good enough to see heat behind cool brick. Typically when people get caught, its through means that I'd imagine would be easily preventable by being less careless.

Suspicious house spotted during police pursuit using a FLIR system;

Upon closer inspection..

One would imagine insulating the attic, and using an extractor fan/filter system, one could not only mask the smell as well, but disguise all the heat exhaust as a chimney, or central heating exhaust.

ETA: Just discovered the article those pics are from, was a house mistaken for a grow operation due to poor attic insulation, but the point still stands I suppose!
