FFs.. blackmail basically. I hope they stand their ground.

In March a leaked document put the lie to bosses' claims that the shift changes were not about cutting night cover.

London's entire firefighting force have been told they'll be sacked if they refuse to go along with cuts to night cover.

The capital's 5,000 firefighters were given 90 days' notice on Wednesday night by the London Fire Authority.

So basically, they need stand strong and tell them to fk off.

"The proposals are for firefighters to work four 12-hour shifts a week, two starting at 0800 BST and two at 2000 BST.

The night shift would include a rest period of four hours."

What's the current set up?

the BBC said:
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has said a blog posting by London Fire Brigades' (LFB) commissioner threatens its entire workforce with the sack.
so not exactly a balanced source for the story!

Does the BBC just report what anyone else says without trying to find out the facts?

Apart from when they're not fighting fires, attending RTCs, checking and maintaining their equipment on station, doing training and drills... they're out making sure hydrants work, visiting schools on education visits, performing home fire safety checks, fire prevention work in restaurants and the like...

All that squeezed in with driving a black cab and running building firms......no wonder there is such a shortage of fireman and never any queues or waiting lists for positions to be filled......rolleyes

So they're gonna be working pretty much the same or similar shifts to frontline NHS and Police staff who manage it without getting four hour rest periods during nightshifts.
Infact, for a huge number of the NHS staff, they're lucky if they manage to get any breaks during a 12 hour shift while still getting paid less than the firefighters.

Excuse me if I don't feel even slightly sorry for them!

I do 12hr shifts..and certainly wouldn't say no to a 4hr break on nights. I'm lucky if I get time to eat my doughnut in the car!

Did you know there's no such word in the dictionary as gullible. It's invented. Honestly, look it up if you don't believe me.

Any who don't like it can quit. I'm sure there are plenty who will take the job for them.

The met Police work the same shift pattern I believe? Without the 4 hour rest period...

The police started introducing this about 17 years ago, it worked well despite initial resistance. I think this'll go the same way.

We did two days training on the Green Goddesses at Donnington then stationed at Elgin, we only had 4 shouts over the whole strike and the local fire brigade was still demanding £28,000 a year! I know it was slightly different in the big cities but they still aren't worth that now. There is such a waiting list to join the Fire Service get some new ones trained up and call their bluff. Is the spirit of Andy Gilchrist still inspiring the London Brigades?

Quite a funny one in Yorkshire on the last strike actually. There was a problem with a block of flats and the might of the British Army couldn't get through the security door. Worked out in the end though; word got back to the brazier and two of them jumped in a car and went to sort the job out. What was the union demanding? 40% increase? Yes it sounded like a lot, but personally you couldn't pay me enough to go into a burning building and drag someone out with my arse on fire, so I have no problem with them earning the same as Police and others.

It's a very sad situation that's arisen and IMO is fairly typical of what a union does best; sets out to flex some muscle and serve itself at the expense of everything including the members. The union took them out on strike, granted with the approval of membership, but the majority of fire fighters I know never wanted to be on strike. The result was the union caving in because it couldn't win and a raft of reforms being implemented as a result. I don't think there were any winners in that one.

but surely in the same way as we get the government we deserve, they get the union they deserve? If they really cared they'd stand and get elected and change the bloody situation from within the union.
