Can't disagree with that, but I think for a large part that demographics played a part in the strike decision also. There are some quite militant areas of England and some that are less so. I know people who have thrown out of the FBU since the last mess they created, whilst it seems in some areas their support is as strong as ever.

It's an interesting situation, but I know three fire fighters who have no problems with the change in working methods. Each one of them has said you can't stand in front of progress and that reforms were always bound to happen. I just don't like the suggestion they're all out to do as little as possible; like I said, knowing some of what they deal with day to day, you couldn't pay me enough.

This
Apart from when they're not fighting fires, attending RTCs, checking and maintaining their equipment on station, doing training and drills... they're out making sure hydrants work, visiting schools on education visits, performing home fire safety checks, fire prevention work in restaurants and the like...
When was the last time you ever seem them inspect hydrants ? i was shocked a few years ago when trying to fill up a old dennis carmichael fire engine how many hydrants were non operational.
Seen them down my street once or twice every few years checking the hydrants.

I do 12hr shifts..and certainly wouldn't say no to a 4hr break on nights. I'm lucky if I get time to eat my doughnut in the car!
Heaven save us from a fire service that has the same sort of response times as the Police. It might as well be disbanded - fires would be out and people dead in their cars by the time they turned up.

No.

Standing by for contingencies is working.

I used to employ people to do <15minutes of active work at precise moments during 4 hour shifts, they were, of course, paid for 4 hours.

Not all jobs involve continuous action.
