To sum up, should the Pastor be free to burn the books? Yes

Should there be laws in place that allow the state to punish someone who intentionally causes incitement to hatred or violence? Yes.
I can agree wholeheartedly with this - even if we represent perhaps two distinct philosophies, yours I assume largely secular, mine admittedly Christian.
Indeed, I am coming at this from a secular view

But I while the majority of muslims are not engaged in a war with the west, I would say the majority of muslims - certainly in the muslim world, don't differentiate between us ie the secular western society and Judeo-Christian values, and more importantly a significant minority react with hatred and violence to acts which the majority of other world religions - especially Christianity accepts/endures
Yep, I'd agree with that smile
+1 yes Ths is a noteworthy difference IMO.

hehe
Denied a burn permit by the fire dept. That can get him locked up for an illegal open fire.
Do you think they'd follow that through? Would be quite nice to see video flying round the internet of him being arrested as he tries to light the books.

Nutjob Terry Jones, pastor of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, who wants to burn the Koran, convicted of fraud and misappropriation of a title (Dr) in Germany. Fined €3000,- and the present members of his church in Cologne are searching for the money from the kitty which is missing thanks to Nutjob.
Is this guy serious? Nutjob, telly pastor and crook!!!

"Dougal, the money was just resting in my account."
roflroflrofl

Very, very good.

We were out in Florida last week, and were on our way back from Busch Gardens on friday evening. Were somewhat surprised at the number of churches that seemed to be dotted all over the place. And on one street corner, a bunch of religious protesters, mumbling something about jews and zionists. Didn't care about them, but the vacant looks and badly written signs put them straight down as idiotic nutjobs.

Does America have more idiotic nutjobs than almost anywhere else in the world???
I think that distinction is held by Hampshire. wink
Judging by some of my ex's, you (sadly) have a point.
Some? My goodness. All in one community? what if they unite and plot a revenge upon you? smile

This is a total joke and non story.

Why are the actions of 50 nutters being taken as being of any significance let alone enough to be headline news on pretty much every channel this morning?

So if he has been denied a permit, do you think the relevant authorities would take action to stop him?

Words hurt - try an acrimonious separation.

'Whitey' has been flung at me as a term of abuse but it can't be used like the 'N' word to put someone 'in their place' in the same way.

It's ironic that a civilised country allows freedom of speech which is consequently abused by morons where (probably) the government/intelligentsia actually agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment but are politically astute enough not to upset people when it's not required.

I'm surprised that Florida/USA doesn't have hate laws like we do here - I'm pretty sure that Pastor Jones would be talking to Inspector Knacker right now.

Why surprised? In a country that has freedom of speech/expression written into its fundament I'd be surprised if they did have such laws.

Absolutely not a non story when taken in the same context as a certain Danish cartoonist

The media are whipping it up and will sit back and report on the consequences.

If the media weren't giving it the airtime who would know what 50 people of an extreme religious persuasion were up to?

Surprised because they've had time to make amendments.

Also..the country was founded by religious non-conformists who were trying to protect themselves from persecution. The US constitution was written by a fairly neutral intelligentsia but they lived in a very religious 18th century country where religious minorities were frequently at loggerheads.

one religeous group commits acts, burning flags/books/murdering people, in the mane of it's book and the rest of that religion do nothing, say nothing.

One christian decides to burn another fairy story and everyone is shouting that "he does not represent us" ith even the US Sectretary Of State publicly condemning the guy.

What would happen if a Muslim nutter decided to burn a bible?

A, there would be an outcry and Billery Clinton would be making statments on behalf of the US Govt

B, The most senior Muslim in the US would decry the act and point out that he does not reprsent the Muslim faith, or

C, Nothing, and some people would even defend the guys right to do this and to celebrate his ethnic diversity?

I bet I can guess.
Amen to that Brother... Oh, hang on.

This might seem like a stupid question but just how many copies of the Koran does a Christian Pastor need?

Not sure, that is a very local call. I will be watching with interest. It will depend on the granularity of that particular locality's fire code. ErnestM may be able to help.

We do have hate laws, those are federal; we shall see. Most think these laws are stupid because a crime should be a crime. If a crime is done upon a minority, why should the penalty be more than if done upon a non-minority. Is one's murder more significant than another's?
