To put it into context, the GREEK navy will be approximately twice as large as the Royal Navy.
But most are just tiny coastal ships designed to keep the Turks at bay.
You say that. Wait until Greece invades...

I wonder how many young people will be attracted to a career in the RN?

Are they closing the Dartmouth academy? Not much point training large numbers of officers for non-existent jobs and little prospect of command.

It's like everything we ever had as an empire HAS to go. How long until we get rid of the monarchy?
Our fall from grace is truly saddening.

I don't think they'll be a recovery in my life time.

How long until people listen to Greece more than us?

To be fair, the Greeks were a dominant force in the civilised world for a lot longer than we were !

But they took there sweet time about it and didn't have anywhere near the territory we had.
We rose and fell fast, but our influence has been among the greatest.

Now look at us. We can't even keep a few ships afloat without some beancounters moaning.

I thought reading that article in the Telegraph that the next war we'll be witnessing is the one between the Navy, the RAF and the Army. I really, really hope that some joined up thinking comes out of the Strategic Review.

And now all they have to show for it is a tourist industry. Maybe they WILL invade us or specifically London.

Whilst reducing the amount of ASW frigates has some merit, decomissioning the relatively recent amphibious craft and minesweepers seems entirely irrational.

The RAFs transport fleet certainly isnt sufficient to carry heavy equipment and deploying a significant ground force by rail or road would surely be a logistical nightmare.

All empires fail. The British one had good points and bad points. Same as the Greek one, one of the greats I would think.
What is sadder; an empires fall from grace or one trying to cling to its past triumphs? Our navy should be a force fit for today's purposes, not for what UK PLC was 50 years ago. I am not arguing that there should be fewer or more ships than 25, but that looking at it as a matter of prestige/lost empire/look at the Hellenic navy is not how we should build our force.

How about putting it this way.
If Argentinia try something funny again, could we keep the Falklands?

rofl

The govt would probably say we couldn't afford the fuel to send a submarine down there.

The Argentinian army is a lot smaller than it was, conscription has been abolished as well as budget cuts.

Their Navy only has 5 significant surface vessels (one of which is a UK built type 42 destroyer) and 3 submarines.

Their Air Force hasn't been updated since 1982, they still operate Mirage III/V, Skyhawks and Pucaras.

They would have no hope this time.

UNLESS they could get a sneaky-beaky SF team to take out the Typhoons at Mt Pleasant, Pebble Island style. Then we would be proper fked.

6 Type 45's and 6 Type 23's? The shiny new 45's primary armament is only capable to Surface to Air, and I'll be surprised if it even works. That Greek fleet would only have to contend with 6 x 4.5" guns because we didn't buy or fit any anti-ship launchers to save cash.

At least the single carrier will be well defended, it'll have six Type-45's to itself for aircover as they are bloody useless for anything else at the moment.
