Byford was Private Eye's favourite BBC exec whenever they talk about too much pay. He has always worked at the BBC so their favourite excuse of being potentially poached was not true it seems.

He also had a redundant role. Doubling up on other execs and trying to find yet more jobs for himself so he could justify his existence.

This is the problem with the BBC. Its a media company, a sector where jobs for your mates still rules, and its publicly funded so has no problem with trying to make a profit so people keep their jobs for no reason.

Oh here we go again.

I watched F1 qualifying at 2am last weekend and then the race again at 7am. The BBC covered it completely. They covered it on radio as well. And on the website. And they provide the driver tracker which is superb. And they cover free practice as well - all 3 sessions.

And they do this 19 times a year. So for £145 that's less than a tenner per race weekend. A bargain if you ask me.

Oh and then I get Top Gear thrown in for free. And some amazing nature programmes. And some terrific shows like Masterchef, Question Time and The Apprentice. Oh and a website that is often first port of call for news.

And in between all this I don't have to watch an advert for Cillit Bang or listening how some kid wants to do a poo at Paul's.

£145 a year? I spent more on a dinner out last week. One dinner.
ITV's f1 coverage was just as good if not better and cost a fraction of what the bbc paid, just to prove a point with OUR money. Ffs its not the bbc that films it, all they have to do is the links.
ITV's coverage was awful! Even disregarding James Allen, there was no coverage of any of the practice sessions, qualifying was usually tucked away on ITV4 somewhere, they were infatuated with Lewis Hamilton and his Dad to the point we got coverage of nothing else, all their "features" were dumbed down lifestyle dross, they quite often cut the post-race interviews for Corrie or somesuch AND we had to put up with adverts at the most inopportune moment. The BBC coverage is light years ahead IMO. I'll give ITV credit for their BTCC coverage, but I can't see how anyone could think their F1 coverage was better than the Beeb's.

ITV started the internet based elements, that the BBC have continued and greatly expanded upon as newer technology and speed of delivery exist - think full frame pictures on the red button (Ch 301) etc. The technology moves so fast the BBC's service seems more complete because of their ability to supply more of it in a wider way.

ITV F1 coverage didn't win a bucket full of awards for nothing. Technology, production, sport, news even IIRC!

I'll give you the ads were unfortunate at best, certainly. James Allen was just plain awful and the pre & post race shows were a bit lowest common denominator.

ITV took a blank sheet of paper when they picked up the coverage, meaning they were able to start afresh and improve the format, which the BBC are now able to develop and improve. Did the old BBC coverage include pit walks before the establishing lap ?

Nobody used to cover practice because the cameras were not manned, so no footage was available - catch 22. Now channels want the feed as they have a means of displaying them, the cameras are manned. It'll be a cost the combined broadcasters have to bear as sixty plus production people need to be paid etc.

The BBC shuffling the schedule and putting the delayed qualifying on live on Sunday morning also scores good points. Even at 2am its not often they'll shuffle the schedule for a non-crucial sporting event.

ITV won it awards on the sporting achievement over the coverage.

If you think it is good, then fair be it. However when ITV have to apologise for their own "award winning" coverage, then it wasn't good.

I used to think the beeb should pay market rate for its stars but a recent news item has made me think otherwise.

I believe the beeb should let folk start their careers in the beeb but then once the commercial sector wants them then they should be released into the commercial sector

I believe this case in particular is an example of an individual that would excel in a commercial sector as his main attributes would be so enhanced by having loads of adverts

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-13199...

He is an annoying fat bd can you imagine how fking annoying he would be with loads of adverts in his show and if he was on capital one i'd never hear the up here in scotland

Disgusting that public money is squandered and abused like this.

Speaking of which, what's the deal with the 7/7 bombings enquiry? How the hell can it take 5 years to tell us the bleeding obvious? Talk about milking it! I hate to imagine the money squandered away over that time, and what the final bill will be.
