Ok just read the metro this morning, now I haven't looked into the details but someone has died from taking mephedrone. All other deaths before this had other drugs involved.

What I want to know from a politics point of view, is how did this become illegal whilst a "legal high"? Without any proof of it being harmful?

I read that that the autopsy report showed at least 4 other drugs, and that her internal organs had shut down from the combined toxic effect of all the drugs.

19 year old girl right?

Once again, not actually mephadrone that killed her.

Maybe I'm being dim, mephedrone = large scale production in chinese factories. Ordered online with no drug dealers involved and tax paid on it. Much cheaper than let's say . .

Cocaine=overpriced and run by cartels who apparently aren't nice people, completely underground economy which see farmers remaining poor whilst importers make lots of tax free money.

I just don't understand how it can be banned with no scientific study and as mentioned above if no one has died from it why all the scaremongering hype in the media

The government couldn’t be seen to allow one drug and not another , hence the ban everything apart from tobacco and alcohol policy . . . . . it has nothing to do with the massive tax revenues and lobbying powers of the tobacco and booze mfr's, who haven’t historically campaigned to have everything apart from their own product outlawed wink

Saw this while looking over the shoulder of someone else reading their metro. Lol.

"First Mephedrone death!" I read. Pretty amusing considering the same paper was harping on about Meph deaths 5 months ago.

No doubt it was cut with some pretty suspect stuff as dealers now run the show.

More proof, imo, that regulation is the key.

Exactly, when buying meph online you knew you were getting meph, now quite why you would buy meph if you have to meet a dealer is beyond me. You can get better stuff cheaper
