The Severn barrage was "Green" but never environmentally friendly to the Severn estuary. Glad it's gone.

Nuclear is the only sane choice at the moment. Fission for now but hopefully fusion in the moderate future if ITER can be made to work.

I wonder how long it will take for "No Nuclear" camps to be set up near the sites?

The anti-nuclear protesters are an embarrassment to the UK.
Even the French probably look across the channel and laugh.

No doubt there's some left but even the Greenies probably realise that if it's not Nuclear then it's coal, gas or oil that'll be burnt in it's place. Think of all that CO2 or whatever it is now they say is killing the planet.

Hopefully the start of many nuclear plants so we can get to a point of being able to export electricity and at the same time not be held to randsom over power by the likes of Russia et al.

Absolutely.
I ripped down some anti nuclear posters the other month. Doing my bit for the environment, you see.
This is seriously great news.

More nuclear, less bks. Although I also think tidal could be interesting.
Wind is just concentrated balls though.

hehe

An excellent slogan for a t-shirt.

this should be good news for british engineering firms too as long as the work is kept within the uk.

I really can't see what the logical objection to nuclear is. I can only guess that the anti-nuclear mob are made of the anti-everything mob and those that associate nuclear energy with nuclear weapons. An unholy alliance of Trotskyite juveniles and bark-shod earth mothers.

Anyone remember the GLC's nuclear free zones of the 1980s? What a pile of mushy brained, socialist, namby-pamby horse-st.

I don't think we have the capability. Too much procrastinating under that Blair. So now we'll have to buy it from the French.

Not really, Nuclear power is about as green as it gets - the fact that the lentil weavers don't see it is the massive irony.

The problems still stem from poor education, the idea that microwave ovens are un-natural, from comic books and stories of newcular toxic sludge turning everyone into mutants.

If they just had a science teacher that would look at coal fired power stations - they give out evil CO2 and won't last forever, Solar panels, expensive, and they don't produce as much power as you'd think.

Windfarms, amazing free energy, apart from the fact a field full of them is a drop in the ocean in power terms, and as soon as anyone tries to build one, everyone complains.

So what is left?
Well, there's a handy element that just loves producing huge amounts of heat and power, on small amounts of fuel. Waste is tiny.

The only problem is people seem to think it hangs around in glowing barrels and produces a 50/50 ratio of superheros to villains.

Already, this country has fallen behind in the nuclear power stakes, we've got a lot of catching up to do.

Solar panels, like all semiconductors, are very messy to produce. Lots of very nasty chemicals going into the water.

Nuclear waste comes in two forms - the nasty stuff is small in quantity, but dangerous for longer than any civilization has yet lasted, so we don't really know what to do with it. The lower grade stuff is in much larger quantities (clothes, for example) but it's not quite clean enough to landfill.

Nuclear is our best option, especially if you've bought the MMGW and CO2 bks, but it isn't without it's problems.

The windmills seem to be a complete waste of time and money.

At the risk of repeating what i said when the other lot announced a shortlist...

I live a few miles from an existing Station and the proposed site of a new one. Just build the damn things FFS. Throw me a shovel and i'll make a start.

Bloody brilliant news. A bit of common sense. The Severn Barrage was projected to cost 30Bn I believe. Barking!

I saw that number and assumed it was a misprint.

£30bn - Blimey, You could import a lot of French Electricity for that kind of money.

I hope we build them all in England, in advance of Devolution......

Which is a fking travesty when in the 50s and 60s we were at the cutting edge. Government in this country has been massively st for longer than most people realise.

I'm looking forward to a nice slice of that nuclear design pie.
