I have a friend who works for Nottingham City Council. She recently told me that in order for the Council to cut costs, staff were being encouraged to deliver mail by hand when out on business. The only problem being they're claiming mileage allowance if going out of their way to deliver something so it's costing more than the Royal Mail would.

I would absolutely love to read the CVs of the decision makers in these places just to owrk out what kind of skills they think they have. It's almost as if the people there were too stupid to avoid being employed and therefore couldn't just sit on their ar$e$.

We look after a very elderly person who lives in Halton and the range of services offered, and the money they must cost, is mind blowing.

I've met one their benefits advisors, an absolutely stunning looking girl, and she managed to fast-track several benefits that the old lady didn't need (she has a reasonable income) but she now gets them anyway.

One of the most ridiculous things was she got her hogher rate Attendance Allowance (this comes from central Government) but then the council only charge her £15/wk for the people who attend to her! The rest of the cost (£140/wk) is paid by the council.

fk it. It's only tax payers money to piss away as randomly as possible, just for a fking laugh eh? I mean, come on, it's not like it's real money is it?
Firstly the benefits system is in place for a reason, they are only informing people that are eligible.

Its also worth pointing out there are probably a lot of people stuck in their homes not claiming benefits because they dont necessarily understand what they are entitled to. Just because you lot are so able and clever doesn't mean everyone is.

Granted though, the bus might be a bit excessive.

They are entitled to go out and get a job to support themselves too.

The benefits should be a safety net. If these people are already in their homes and not dead from starvation or cold, then they have got more than many do!

If they want more, then they should have to contribute something in return. Even if it's a token gesture that would do, but most of the time it's just sap and scrounge.

There are plenty of people who are stuck in their homes in poverty who could do with the extra help

My work has also taken me to lots of random peoples houses (although not related to adult social care) quite often we would come across some 70 year old living off their pension stuck inside a filthy hosue with hardly any food in the fridges. They are either too ill/studpid or without the nouse to know where to ask for help. Some of them think that as long as they are alive its OK for them to live in such filthy conditions without decent food or heating (I dont).

The UK isn't the place that a lot of PHers think it is - there are plenty of people who need help - and not simply because they are too lazy to get a job.

But it isn't a safety net anymore it's become a lifestyle. True it could be worse (google 99ers) but it stopped being solely a safety net a generation ago.

Aye, and the tigers are dying out to, but fk them they didn't evolve quick enough.

I'm not saying that the everyone should have their benefits removed, but a bus travelling the area that manages to give away £1.5 million extra of tax payers money is not a good idea.

That is a worry, isn't it. People who have been caught by the safety net are better off than some of those who are working (according to the Daily Mail).

I agree, but I don't think there are THAT many that are that stupid. They are possibly terminally lazy and simply don't give a crap they live in a crap hole.

As much as we need to help people, we need to help them to help themselves too.

That is of course ignoring the majority who I imagine are just lazy and so un-motivated through years of doing sod all, that they are happy to just keep on scrounging.

We don't need to fall into the trap of feeling sorry for people, who all else aside, could be helping themselves.

As long as someone can be better of on benefits than by working we're screwed. As has ben said benefits have become a lifestyle choice for far too many instead of a real last resort.

And all this talk of poverty is complete st, you want to see poverty, go to Africa, or any number of countries. The idiots in this country have no idea what poverty really is.

They do say

A Newham Council spokesman said: "Moving from 26 different locations to one at Newham Dockside will already have saved us £12m by next March as part of a £68m savings package over three years.

"This council expects to save almost £140m in total by the end of 2014.

Once of the local Councils near to me recently did up a major building for a lot of money but in turn closed lots of other buildings and also ask staff to work at home because the new building probably couldnt accomodate all of them at once. presumably it will save dosh in the end.

But they've still spanked £98m in the coming year on a new office whilst they are making staff cuts!

Indeed but I spose its more complex than that

Firstly I imagine it was in planning long before the recession hit

Secondly if it is self funding and reduces costs in the long run then its probably worth pushing through. If they were still spending similar amounts over the next 5-10 years keeping all those buildings running they may still have had to cut staff - and then have underused buildings.

That doesnt take away from excessive spending of course.

Nottingham are going to introduce a charge to all business with a certain number of car parking spaces. IIRC about £100 per year per space. This is to fund the next Tram phase.

However, this excludes the Mayor of Nottingham who parks the council Rolls-Royce on the pavement in Slab Square!!

Old people are a 'ticking time bomb'. I heard the other day that there are now more over 60s than under 16s in the UK. Obviously that will get worse over time - these oldies are all going to be a massive drain on public funds - moreso in areas with a lot of oldies.
Unlike all the young immigrants and their families who are already a massive drain on public funds..

Surrey has a population of 1.1m, so that's £2k for my household then! irked
