I saw the Sky report as well - sickening.

There is no justification for that sort of thing - no cultural excuses, no religious excuses, no excuses full stop. It's simply wrong to treat people like that.

I had a few trips for work to Sudan back in 04 - place is a mess.

And yet just look at the number of people on here baying for similar treatment for people who mug grannies or rape children.

There seem to be a lot of double standards applied when it comes to people deciding whether this sort of treatment is or isn't acceptable.

Personally, I'd be all in favour of pretty severe corporal punishment for people such as serial burglars. When people are caught time after time and just laugh off the sanctions levied against them, it's time to change the sanctions.

What I would press for would be a clear, transparent, fair legal process leading up to it. I'm in two minds whether it should be made into a public spectacle though. Maybe invite victims to watch if they want to, and oblige first time offenders to do so as part of their rehabilitation?

So wearing trousers is on par with granny bashers and paedophiles? Want to re-think that one?

Want to rethink not actually reading the article before you comment? You know, the one where it says she was wearing a dress, and where it also says the offence she is supposed to have committed is unknown?

Once you've rethought that, maybe you'd like to rethink quoting people out of context? As in the bit where I was responding to Asterix's belief that nobody should ever be treated in that way under any circumstances?

We don't know what this woman is supposed to have done, and without that, I can't make a judgement on whether or not the punishment is deserved, unlike Asterix who can, if he feels that this punishment would be undeserved regardless of the offence.

It may well not be deserved - at least by Western standards if not Sudanese ones - but that doesn't in my view mean this sort of punishment is never deserved.
