£111M spent on council offices

I find it amazing that anyone could defend this!
To me, in one of the country's poorest bouroughs, it smacks of a "Let them eat cake" attitude from the labour council leaders.

You're defending that? I've merely reported the facts available, yet you seem happy to suggest that the disposal will save a load of money and the assumed cost savings will more than cover the cost. Meanwhile they are shedding jobs and also, as someone has indicated not spending money on the local hospital. I know which I'd rather have a few million spent on!
I'm not defending it, just pointing out the innacuracies in your postsevery council is having to shed jobs, it's not exclusive to those that have invested in construction schemes
btw, you neatly avoid this little factoid 'This council expects to save almost £140m in total by the end of 2014'
sounds like a healthy net gain to me
anyways, I'm off to a meeting - I've got to spec an M&E installation and spend millions of public money
Anyway! I just think it is too much money to spend on council offices as opposed to other public services.
Let us know if you find out if they save money or how much they make on the sale of the former sites.
Was up in Yorkshire this week and whiilst I cannot recall details, the local news had a story on Weds about a local Magistrates Courth that is being close now due to the redcuced core payment to the Council despite having a 6 wee refurb costing £110k finished a week ago!
As if these muppets could nto foresee the potential cuts and hold off the work? Although no doubt the refurb was done by a mate or relative of a Councilor......?

..And you believe that? sounds like a healthy net gain to me
The figures would have been compiled by a private consultantcy and will have been audited by the council even before they will have bought the site.
They don't pluck arbitry figures out of the air.

I was in there today. It's got some pretty stunning views overlooking the City Airport.
It was supposed to be for Newham employees only but I believe 2/3 of it is now leased out to local business interests.
having looked into it earlier this afternoon that was always part of the business planIt was supposed to be for Newham employees only but I believe 2/3 of it is now leased out to local business interests.
15,000 m2 council offices, 10,000 m2 c1 office space

Speaking purely subjectively as a contractor who does a lot of work for Newham, long may they keep throwing money about!
Hazel Blears was responsible for splitting Cheshire into Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester - all for political reasons although it was claimed it would lead to 'efficiency' savings. So, instead of having one CC with a large number of centralised teams there are two Councils with twice as many teams; the leaders of EC & CWAC have now decided that many of these teams should be combined i.e. go back to how it used to be.
Just how much money has been wasted in this little enterprise I dread to think. Labour, pi$$ing taxpayers money up the wall.
