It's an open prison. That usually does give an indication of the type of offenders held there.

I think it was being used as an "overflow" for prisoners who should really have been elsewhere.
I'm sure there will be an enquiry into what happened.

"Over the past few nights prisoners have been reluctant to be breathalysed by staff. The staff have been chasing them round the blocks trying to breathalyse them, which is sort of reminiscent of the end scene from Benny Hill to me"

Hardly surprising when there are only two POs on duty at night overseeing up to 550 prisoners. As it's new year, there will be plenty of prisoners on home leave so the prison will be relatively empty. Still, there must be at least 300 prisoners in there so the staffing level is woefully inadequate.

I hear the six ringleaders have been identified and are no doubt in the back of a Serco truck on their way back to a closed prison. As the main focus of the rioters was to destroy all of the recreational facilities, I feel the rest of them will be grassed up pretty promptly!

I read about the small number of staff and was surprised at their number.

What's the point of them destroying the recreational facilities (apart from the obvious)??

No idea. It beggars belief. Of course, the perpetrators will be shipped out to other prisons where they will have all the recreational facilities available to them.
The losers are all of the other well behaved prisoners who are quietly doing their time and just keeping their heads down.

What - all of them?

Don't forget, Ford is for minor offenders and low risk prisoners.
To get into prison today you need to have some kind of record , so let them burn

There are some people for whom prison has been genuinely helpful in getting them back to normal society and life. But I am not convinced its that many.

A good friend of mine, many years ago, got 12 months for growing (quite a lot) of cannabis plants at his house. No previous, full time (skilled) job, fully contributing member of society. He got moved to an open prison after 6 weeks, and he was a good example of the whole point of open prisons. I think it will be a huge shame if those prisoners who are not a risk to society, and who are entirely suitable to be kept in open prisons, have to be moved to closed prisons because of the actions of a few POS tts.

My son's now back in his room. The rioters are in a truck on their way to Belmarsh. Good riddance. They are to be charged with prison mutiny!!

Whatever, the poor and increasingly so, taxpayers will foot the bill for rebuilding and the extra time the perpetrators will receive.
