Yup, according to a governor it apparently it would be impossible to stop alcohol being smuggled in.

TO A PRISON!!!

FFS. banghead
It's an open prison where the prisoners are allowed to walk around free. Some of them even have jobs in the nearby town, etc.

It would be pretty hard to stop it being smuggled in without beefing up staff and security measures significantly.

There aren't any cells at Ford (or any open prisons)

What - all of them?

Don't forget, Ford is for minor offenders and low risk prisoners.
To get into prison today you need to have some kind of record , so let them burn
Idiot.

I've known several over the years that have done bird for first time offences.

So you're 'liberal' because you don't want people to burn to death?

Latest News: Riot at Ford Prison. Inmates had a Fiesta for New Year, lost Focus and then scored some Ghia. There was a police Escort but I believe some of the foreign prisoners wanted to see their Consuls who were on holiday in Capri, a Popular resort.

I'm surprised some of the prisoners haven't been shifted to Anglia (East, of course).

Yes, liberals are part of the problem, just like when they wanted women to be voting and then black people to have equal rights to whites, what ever do they want next, equal rights for Homosexuals?!?!?

They have a much better staff to inmate ratio at Butlins maybe they could take the running of it over.

I have commented on these issues before. I am very involved in various areas of government and spend a lot of time at all the prisons.

The simple fact is that Ford is very much like butlins in the way it is laid out and run. However it is a pre release prison and inmates have nothing to gain from rioting or causing trouble and everything to lose hence the low staffing level.
There are also other factors at play reg how the prisons are run locally and by the gov.

Sadly in this situation as has been said it sounds like it was being used for overflow with inmates who really should not have been outside of cat c prisons. It is these inmates who caused trouble.

Some would say that places like ford are bad. I disagree.
They help prepare inmates for release by allowing them to get jobs which then gets them a wage so that when they get out they can get decent accommodation easier etc.
It also teaches them to respect the rules and gives them respect back. Its not perfect and it will fail from time to time.

However its either this or just letting them out of prison where they have no freedom and are not expected to in any way prove they are ready to be let out into the public again.

I really wouldn't be surprised if it turned out the Unions were behind it.

Surely there is a happy medium between having 2 members of staff to control hundreds of criminals and having "intervention squads" on standby?
No, there is not.
The only "control" ability a PO has, as standard, is to appeal to an inmate to behave in an acceptable manner or go on report.
POs are, no doubt, trained in how to determine when a situation is getting out of hand but probably not to the depth a psychologist will be.
Perhaps we should have 24 hours monitoring of all wings in prisons by psychologists?
You then have to consider the responsibility of the Prison Service to it's employees, it cannot expect them to enter any situation without the necessary equipment to deal with it.
It's the many laws covering this that determine response.
Force, even in a prison riot, has to be appropriate.
The Courts, considering legislation in place, are the final arbiters.

I never understand how these situations are allowed to get this far out of control.
You'd want the added costs of "intervention squads" on permanent standby, at every establishment, to render that impossible.
It's down to numbers and how quickly a situation can escalate, especially if there's planning behind it.
There are standby squads! They are known as reported in the article as Tornado teams that are sent in from other local and regional prisons.
