Why do it? Because they can!
I hope for their sakes, in 50 years’ time they can afford to maintain all of these concrete bridges. After a bridge collapsed 2005 in the US a report by American Society of Civil Engineers said "If the US started to inspect and repair its bridges to eliminate the deficiencies, it would take 20 years and cost $9 Billion!" Don't think that would worry the Chinese - they've spent 5.5 billion (and that's in pounds, not dollars) on this bridge alone ...and built it in less than 4 years.
