But you really have to ask - why?! They are building right across the middle of a lagoon, when much shorter routes could be achieved.

Oh, and apparently it can withstand earthquakes measuring 8.0. Time will tell!

Indeed.

And it's not like the Chinese are short of money.

This is nothing... take a look at the Beijing-Shanghai highspeed railway line.

Over 1300 km of near continuous viaduct

Here is a link to a list of the worlds longest bridges... take a look at how many of them are in China... then scroll to the bottom to see what's currently being built

Why do it? Because they can!

I hope for their sakes, in 50 years’ time they can afford to maintain all of these concrete bridges. After a bridge collapsed 2005 in the US a report by American Society of Civil Engineers said "If the US started to inspect and repair its bridges to eliminate the deficiencies, it would take 20 years and cost $9 Billion!" (Source: NY Times)

in 50 years time China's GDP will be over 40 trillion dollars (est), I think the Chinese can spare $20-30 Billion and manpower is not an issue either.

Don't think that would worry the Chinese - they've spent 5.5 billion (and that's in pounds, not dollars) on this bridge alone ...and built it in less than 4 years.

To use an American phrase 'Peanuts!'

Exactly! They used at least 10,000 workers to build this bridge, built from opposite ends and connected in the middle.

Walls/Bridges - The Chinese like to build long ones.... But then with the amount of cheap labour they have, it is no great shock.

Is that supposed to be a special accomplishment? I believe if you ask those who built your large roadways, they will say they did the same thing. smile

Don't see how the longest bridge is very impressive. The longest suspension bridge span on the other hand. China do have a few of the longest there too to be fair.
