China builds longest bridge
Discussion
4 years? wow.The bloody gasboard has been here digging up the roads and causing chaos for the last two years, and it will take them another
year at least to finish.tts.Should take a lesson from our Chinese brothers on how to get a job done.In fact sod that just build a bridge over Macclesfield
and leave the town to the gasboard after all they've dug up every inch of it.

Because they can and to show themselves as the only true superpower left in the world.
This shouldn't be a surprise. Despite their reputation for knocking out cheap knock-off copies, the Chinese did invent (amongst a long list) papermaking, gunpowder, printing and the compass. The Chinese also have the advantage of comparitively cheap labour and being bereft of NIMBYism.

I wonder what the cost would have been for the same bridge being built in the UK ?
About the sameIf you didn't include all the meetings, elf and safety, meetings, focus groups, meetings, meetings, strikes, meetings and meetings

Maybe one day, and one day approaching quicker with each passing day, but not today, the American eagle is still flying high.jbi said:
This is nothing... take a look at the Beijing-Shanghai highspeed railway line.
Over 1300 km of near continuous viaduct
Here is a link to a list of the worlds longest bridges... take a look at how many of them are in China... then scroll to the bottom to see what's currently being built

China certainly has some mamouth construction going on.
Fancy a bridge over (165 km) 100 miles long FFS.
Then next with 114 km long 70 miles long, these are huge by any standards.
I put it down to the fact that China is the only country with any spare cash to do any decent building.
That Beijing - Shanghai train line, I think I read some where that 80% of the line is on a bridge, 15% is in a tunnel, and 5% is on the ground.
I can't wait to see the line open for fare paying customers, and buy a ticket.

in 50 years time China's GDP will be over 40 trillion dollars (est), I think the Chinese can spare $20-30 Billion and manpower is not an issue either.
Go and have a look at China's demographics, cheap labour is going to run out quite soon.Bing o said:

Go and have a look at China's demographics, cheap labour is going to run out quite soon.It's amazing what a country can do when;
a) It's not saddled with nearly £5trillion of debt.
b) When it's not adding to that debt around £20billion a year 'combating climate change'.
c) When it hasn't got the HSE and unions getting in the way of industrial progress.
d) When it has an abundant supply of engineers and labourers.

I'd question point D. a) It's not saddled with nearly £5trillion of debt.
b) When it's not adding to that debt around £20billion a year 'combating climate change'.
c) When it hasn't got the HSE and unions getting in the way of industrial progress.

With an ageing West Population they are likely to face competition for workers. They are also likely to be a bit cheesed off with they find all those American bonds aren't worth what they paid for them.
Which is why the Chinese are mining most of Africa and using the locals as slave labour. There is a reason why their empire has been kicking around for a few millenia....Bing o said:
