Because drivers drive in them. They are, afterall, only painted tarmac.

Fair enough, I've only ever experienced cylce lanes where the road has been so wide that driving in them would be ridiculous.

But I agree with your other comment that cycle lanes wouldn't be necessary if drivers gave a little more room.

Overall though I don't understand the salt damage but potholes are fair game. I'd try and claim if my alloys were buckled due to potholes so would do the same for my road bike.
