Not quite.
I as a general rule dont mind cyclists as i dont have any issues with them used to be one myself.
What i do take issue with is them trying to claim they are just as important or more important than car drivers which is incorrect. Car owners pay massive amounts of tax at the pump on insurance and on road tax. I would guess somewhere like 30-40 billion a year a proportion of which goes to road maintenance directly and a smaller proportion if you wish goes indirectly through fund given by the government to local councils.
The cyclists now want compo for their bikes getting damaged by potholes and salt even though technically a fair proportion do not contribute directly to roads maintenance. They also want damaged and potholed cycle lanes given the same repair priority as normal car lanes.
I just dont think its acceptable.
I personally dont cycle to work as i cant as i drive for a living.

Back to the original point.
Serious Cyclists have whats known as a "Winter Bike" for precisely this reason because salt is an absolute B'stard for knackering your drive train. I have a £6000 road bike and wouldnt take that out in the salty winter conditions any more than my 450bhp per ton kit car. Both would get absolutely wrecked.
So I have a Company car for normal driving and basically give up hooning around in Winter and a cheapo road bike (although still with a Carbon frame but cheaper componentry) for Winter training.
So compensation for salt damage to bikes....NO...not real cyclists and they should get back in their box.

I can kind of see their point. having recently got a road bike my opinion over the condition of some roads has totally changed. What seems like a nice smooth flat road in the car is often actually horribly rough and ripply on a bike with no suspension. Added to which most pot holes appear in the areas where bikes tend to be (near the kerb) forcing me out wider to annoy the traffic....

When i was a cyclist i was paying £3k a year in VED.
I also thought you were simply a troll with your OP, but surely to god above man, you cannot be serious?

What are you talking about, you mong? Practically every adult cyclist owns vehicles too, and every single adult in the uk pays tax, there are no exceptions!

I see so every cyclist owns a car? Interesting. Can you show me where you got this "Fact" from. When i was a cyclist i was paying £3k a year in VED.

The fact every person in the uk pays tax is irrelevant. The bit thats important is that the roads are paid for in essence by taxes raised from motorists.
Sure plenty of cyclists own cars it doesnt mean however they should get priority either over or at the same level as motorists in having their cycle lanes repaired.
Nor sould they be able to claim damages from the council for damage to their bicycles from potholes.
Unlike car drivers its much easier for them to avoid them if they are paying attention.
As to some of the comments on here. Pathetic is the only word i can think of. Rather than simple reasonable discussion all some posters seem capable of is insults. Terribly mature.
I drive a car.
I haven't paid VED/Road tax for about a decade.
I haven't paid for insurance for about a decade either. Or even VAT on servicing or parts, cos I don't even pay for my car to be serviced or repaired.
You got me for paying tax on fuel. I pay for some of that.
I do pay around twenty grand a year in income tax, though. I'd imagine several thousand a year in VAT. Over a grand in Council Tax. I'm about to pay many thousands in Stamp Duty, too.
I also ride a bike. I don't particularly enjoy crashing into pot holes. I suppose I could avoid doing so by riding in a swerving style across the carriageway but I doubt that would be appreciated by other road users and would likely lead to injury and PH threads about idiot cyclists impeding tax paying car drivers.
Incidentally I know of an awful lot of cyclists and I don't know of a single adult person who owns and regularly rides a bike who isn't also a car driver/owner. I'm sure they exist, perhaps there are lots of them lower down the social ladder. But then lower down the social ladder there are an awful lot of car drivers who don't pay VED/insurance/MOT/fuel duty without a valid reason. I care more about that subject to be honest.
I really wish these sorts of threads would cease. There's enough room in my life and my world for both cyclists and car drivers. So long as thye're all contributing to the exchequer.
