I can't believe the amount of wasted effort in this thread.

It's like trying to teach a cat to knit.

I understood there were a couple of million pre 73 cars in use, no idea how many bikes.
Or perhaps i'm wrong. Some big sums being avoided nonetheless.

I'd also bet the vast majority are used as 2nd cars and do very little mileage per year

I dunno, if you managed that it would be a goldmine - I'd pay good money to see that... biggrin

Maybe, but you still don't have to pay VED. It's a choice.

Lurking, mostly. I occasionally wander into NPE when I feel the need to get back in touch with my inner little-Englander :-)

It will probably make Heebs fall off his chair but I entirely disagree with the OP.

Road repairs are paid for from council tax and general taxation, which everyone pays.

Taxes on car use are not hypothecated for anything, or we'd all have our own solid gold motorway by now.

Cyclists are as entitled to recompense if they damage their bikes on a bad road surface as anyone else.

Unbelievably just been watching south east today and cyclists are pushing for compo from the local council for damage to their bicycles caused by salt and sand from the roads and from potholes.

They are also it seems trying to demand that cycle lanes are given the same priority for repair as normal roads.

Are these idiots out of their fking minds???

They pay nothing to use the roads its a service provided to them free of charge by road tax paying motorists the feckless idiots.
Pray tell what is road tax? I ride my bike to work and meanwhile pay for VED on my 2 cars say at home. In other words I pay more than a single car household who doesn't use a bike at all.

And incidentally, if there are lots of potholes on cycle lanes, guess where I'm going to place my bike - that's right, in the middle of the carriageway, where I'll delay the journey of knobs like you. smile

Am I allowed to call the OP a moron? Pretty please?

What I don't understand is that cycle lanes are for, er, bicycles so how the hell do they end up with massive potholes in the first place?

Potholes are supposed to be created by the expansion of water, when it turns to ice, followed by continuous overloading by heavy vehicles.

Unless some sweaty cracked truck drivers are riding around on fat ass mountain bikes then I fail to see how these potholes are being generated.

Because drivers drive in them. They are, afterall, only painted tarmac.

The edges of roads tends to be where the fabric of the road surface deteriorates quickly from my experience. Guttering, kerbing, badly patched connections from gas/electricity/phones infrastructure all go "through" the road surface and are broken up by expansion of water etc. Add in traffic vibration from the neighbouring carriageway and they can become a mess.

Well, I think cyclists are stupid. It's a lethal activity because of the sheer number of thick and ignorant tts in cars.

I imagine that after the recent cold spell the number of these cretins swerving at the last minute to avoid potholes has made the roads more lethal than usual to cyclists.

A lot of cyclists do appear to be millitant twunts, but then I do think that if I were to have a nasty 'turn' and suddenly start cycling to work I would spend much of the journey kicking out driver's lights and trying to drag them out of their safety cages, so I find it easy to forgive them their sins.

its hard to take seriously some people who think it ok to mutilate a fellow human being because he dosent pay road tax.
I would guess most people break the law whilst driving speeding parking etc and its probably the same sort of person who disrespects these laws whilst cycling.
I wonder if these same people had lost a friend or a loved one (after being crushed by 2 tonnes of metal) would harbour the same views after attending their funeral.Cyclists get lumped into one category whilst motorists are happy to choose between the sensible and the outrageous and dangerous. Why is it also a fact that these same people will happily sit looking at the rear end of a horse doing 3mph but not afford the cyclist the same courtesy.

It would be better from that perspective if they were an adjunct to the road rather than just a white lined strip at the side.

Depends what type of cyclists you are and the design of the road/cycle lane.

Segregated cycle lanes shouldn't be needed if drivers gave appropriate space and consideration.
