When Im home my veg and meat come from local farm shops. It is vastly better quality and I feel happier. Just the tinned toms, pasta, etc come from the supermarket and I find sod all difference in price between them.
The experience of going to Waitrose however...well it simply means shopping is no longer hell on earth. That is priceless.
(I use whichever bags we have pulled out from the cupboard, including a Wilkinsons one that folds up and buttons up!)

(And if you don't believe this is a motivation for it - go to a Lidl or Aldi in a respectable area and you'll see people packing discount goods into Waitrose bags)
Isn't this merely a function of where they used to shop?I mean, I usually carry my shopping home in a Tesco's bag. It's not that I want people to think I'm a Tesco customer, it's just that's where I happened to buy my bag-for-life.

And well done to them. One of the only shops I can think of that still offers customer service, the staff speak fluent english, you can take things back without argument and they sell quality products that last longer than a couple of months. I cant think of anywhere you get that service.
Sad but true really.
What he said. 1000%Sad but true really.

I don't care what you believe - it's my business to know what motivates people to shop with our various customers.
You only have to search for Tesco / Morrisons / Asda etc on PH to see how passionate people can get about where they will and won't shop - and particularly ensuring people know you don't shop in stores at the 'budget' end of the market.
This is surprising. The vast majority of people don't care that much and surely only the saddest and most shallow of them would actually do what you claim. You only have to search for Tesco / Morrisons / Asda etc on PH to see how passionate people can get about where they will and won't shop - and particularly ensuring people know you don't shop in stores at the 'budget' end of the market.
Surely if someone is that pathetic they'll be unlikely to earn enough to shop there? Or am I going to lose a bit more faith in fairness of the world!
Oddly the most outspoken peope I've met on this issue have been utter losers who are utterly convinced that everyone who isn't like them really does put Aldi shopping in Waitrose bags though none of them have actually summed it up in those words.
It takes a pretty small mind to not think people do those kinds of things. I'm sure it's not that common but I know of people that would do that kind of thing.
That mentality applies in every genre though, cars, watches, clothes, there's always some people that would try to give off an impression of themselves and would feel inadequate if they didn't have the brand names, the new car, the most obvious expensive watch. And it's because some people just have that built into them, and will excersise that in many ways.

I've no axe to grind for any of these stores but your Lidl Vs Waitrose story is comical.
Just search the web for it - it's a well known phenomenon - even commented on and reported on in the broadsheets.okgo said:

But carrier bags!?That mentality applies in every genre though, cars, watches, clothes, there's always some people that would try to give off an impression of themselves and would feel inadequate if they didn't have the brand names, the new car, the most obvious expensive watch. Are you sure it isn't just a question of using whatever bag was to hand in the car glove box? Aldi don't provide their own bags so you need to take your own. If the last shop you went to was a posh one then thats what you'd use at Aldi. Nothing to do with the look of the bag, just using what was to hand. Perhaps the simplest explanation is the correct one?
Buying something because you like it makes sense to me, buying something just to show off the brand , especialy something as trivial as a carrier bag, is a bit incomprehensible to me unless it is a sign of deep insecurity.

It may well be a sign of insecurity, but people do it all the time by buying overpriced clothing which bears a 'designer' label. If someone is prepared to pay way over the odds for a T shirt just because it's got a little green crocodile on the tit, then of course they are going to covet carrier bags from Waitrose, JLP, or Harrods for that matter.VeeFour said:
Just to back this up - look on eBay for completed listings on Harrods Carrier Bags.
Just pulled one up - someone paid £4.20 + delivery for 3 cheapie plastic bags.
You just know why they want them....
I'm so going through all the bags in the wardrobe and Ebaying them. I hate throwing out the pretty paper/card ones so they just gather dust.Just pulled one up - someone paid £4.20 + delivery for 3 cheapie plastic bags.

People are crazy.
This time next year Rodders...

Some people are deeply insecure.
Why the feck else would people be buying Harrods bags?

Perhaps they collect carrier bags?
Need them for props in a tv drama/play?
Could be any number of weird or perfectly logical reason.
Why are you determined to think that this kind of thing doesn't happen?Need them for props in a tv drama/play?

"Why the feck else would people be buying Harrods bags?"
I was simply positing some explanations other than people purchasing them to hide their farmfoods fishfingers in.

I'd only buy there for their warranty, otehr than that I see no difference.
The service is ok, you still get clueless kids wandering round the floor with no clue what to do or say. The same with the whole supermarket argument really, people have to keep justifying why they've paid over the odds for something.
In my experience you're wrong. You don,t have "clueless kids" walking around in either JL or Waitrose, and very recent experience of buying a tv from JL evidenced a level of staff product knowledge and customer service which is unsurpassed. JL and Witrose evry time for me - good quality, good service, generally nice places to shop. Oh, and congrats on your bonuses, enjoy them! The service is ok, you still get clueless kids wandering round the floor with no clue what to do or say.
