Yeah. Strange how I don't feel at home in Sainsburys really!

Anyway, the 18% bonus explains the big grin on my father's face when I saw him last!

Nice to see them doing well and their service is good. I'm disappointed that they've recently watered down their price match policy though, which will probably result in me buying less from them in future.

Sounds like some of you really should be shopping online if interacting with the public is that traumatic for you hehe
I just don't see the need for the forced conversation which they're forced to do.
You then have to endure the forced conversation of the delivery driver.

Wait rose is overpriced pure & simple. John Lewis I am impressed with. Bought a couple of things mail order recently. 1st item excellent service great price. 2nd item didn't work. All sorts of problems, but everyone gave the impression they were genuinely trying to help. 4hrs after delivery of the non-working item had a replacement at 1/3 off. Everyone has problems it's how you deal with them.

John Lewis' never knowingly undersold has gone down the pan, the warranty on white goods for instance has to be the same as a competitor and JL offer a different length of warranty ie 2 years, so the competitors product does not exactly match.

It is self-evident from the relative crowding levels at busy times of Waitrose compared to the other supermarkets that many people agree with you.

I see this very definitely as A Good Thing. I may well end up paying a couple of quid more for my weekly shop at Waitrose than I would were I to endure The Hell That Is Tesco. Money well spent in my view.

Plus Tesco doesn't stock Fentiman's, Illy coffee, Caol Ila, or any of the other things that make life bearable...

My son works at waitrose, and we qualify for a 15% discount in Waitrose and 25% in JL, so we're happy smile
And i totally agree with all the comments regarding quality of staff, it's difficult to get a job there, they don't just take on the first mong that comes along, they are more selective.

I can't disagree, shopping in Waitrose compared to Tesco or Asda is a pleasure & they have some great stuff. But I still baulk at the extra some basics cost. Like for like I'm sure it costs 20-30% more than Tesco or Asda & that is just too much.

From my time at Waitrose (many years ago, so likely to be incorrect) is that the discount is only for the employee and no one else, this includes family members. So no, you don't qualify for a discount, your son does. nono

Edited to add:

"Your family are not allowed to use the card, you can only use it for items that YOU yourself are using, therefore if you are buying something for someone else you are not allowed to claim discount on it. There are a lot of other rules as well that I have forgotten now - they are quite strict though.

You can however apply for someone to become your 'nominated beneficiary', basically you put in the application, it takes a year to process and that person can then use your discount as well providing certain criteria is met. For example, you are living with your girlfriend, you apply to make her your 'nominated beneficiary' then after 12 months if it has been approved they ask you if you still want them to have access to your discount card, then they are issued with their own discount card I think.

As I said they are pretty strict and misuse usually ends up with the perpetrators losing their jobs."

Hmm, since he has only just reached the stage where he is entitled to discount, i am not 100% sure myself, but i am led to believe he can apply for an additional card for his parents or someone else at the same address. We have yet to apply for that, didn't realise it might take that long. For now, he has to come shopping with us...poor lad

I sympathise, you are relying on your son communicating the rules to you and it's not always straightforward.

But for your son's sake, I would be very careful and make the effort to understand the rules, as it is a sackable offence if you are found to abuse them.

In 30 years of working for JL my father has never once, to my knowledge, used his discount for someone else precisely because of this.

Waitrose is worth the extra, mostly because for 90% of their goods there is no extra cost and the complete and utter lack of people who shop at my local Tesco.

I dont give a rats arse how snobbish that sounds. My local Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys are all big hyperstore places that are Godawful experiences each and every time. Crowded, loud, screaming kids, have to fight your way down every isle. Waitrose is quiet, clam and everybody is polite.

In the hell that is shopping, Waitrose is an island of paradise.
Spot on,and you can have a carrier bag without being made to feel guilty too...

People trying to jsutify needless snobbery. Waitrose does indeed sell Illy Coffee, so does any other supermarket I've been in as I always see it when I'm buying the one we get.
