They were carrying some military communications kit which they hoped to hand over to the rebel leadership.The rebels issues are more likely to be leadership and organisation than any lack of weaponry, they should almost be default have a reasonable proportion of the Libyan army's weapons simply because they should be in control of the various army bases in and around Benghazi.
Properly led they should be able to hold out in the various urban areas and make taking them by the army a massively expensive task.
