Everyone here is right.

Human beings operate on a system of morality that it is darn close to that which is best for passsing on our... replicators... (genes mostly, but also culture etc) for bloody obvious reasons!

So if everyone is very similar, like in Japan, everyone helps one another out.

In London this would be a dammed mess.

There is a price to pay for all this... For example, superman Soovy, alleged daily mail reader*, alleged trader, alleged barrister, and all around alleged genius multi talented polymath probably used his skills to get around these things, but there are many places, even in Tokyo, where non Japanese are simply not welcome. But those who are are very well looked after....

*this bit is true at least hehe

Sadly there was plenty of looting going on in chch in the first week or so after the quake.

Small minority of people are scum and will take advantage.

In Japan I'm sure they have a criminal element but the areas effected are so destroyed by the tsunami I doubt theres access or much to loot.

Outside of the tsunami areas I dont think theres been much damage.

Perhaps there is some looting, but there are more important issues to report.

I have spent time in Japan too. It's not cobblers. I agree they can be very gracious, and there are many things about Japanese culture that should be emulated by the rest of the world. There is also ethnocentrism there. I have American friends married to Japanese citizens who can tell you hellish stories. There is plenty of documented evidence as well.

I agree with the sentiment that if you fk about, you should be out. And that we could learn a lot from them. But if you don't fk about, you shouldn't be treated poorly for no reason. Plenty of that does happen too.
Rest assured that the Japanese are one of most ethnocentric races I have ever come across. It is the only place that I have been prevented entry to a bar because of my race. As others have stated, I have many many stories about poor treatment of foreigners.

I pay tax here but I can't vote. 3rd generation immigrants from Korea are denied passports and votes because of their ethnicity.

Again, it stems from the education system: the Japanese are the best and everyone else is second class...

Yes, agreed. I didn't mean to say that they are not ethnocentric, if that's what you think I am saying. Rather, I was trying to convey that they have many good qualities, but also some bad, like ethnocentrism, and we don't need to copy their bad qualities.

What I found most interesting in the article I linked to was the racist comments in the 600+ comments section. It made Pistonheads seem like a Sunday morning church group!

historically japan has not been open to outsiders for very long though, has it?I guess over time they will change, but for much of their history they have been quite isolationist? (this may all be wrong i have very vague knowledge of japanese history!)

Why not looting?

Because they are a people with honour and decency in the main.

But as above they are in essence a racist nation i.e. if you are not Japanese then you are not as good as them, this is highly racist.. If you don't believe me, go work for a Japanese bank.....

Or any Japanese company for that matter. You're a white slave, nothing more, nothing less.

a couple of reasons really
1) Distance from Liverpool to Sapporo : 5452.1 Miles

( 8774.3 Kilometers / 4734.6 Nautical Miles )
therefore too far for the white vans
2) Easyjet don't fly there
laugh

Just seen this as a reply to one of the less racially tolerant comments:

"Are you Hank Hill's dad?"
