About bloody time, hopefully this will put a stop to people coming back from holiday and finding a bunch of Romanians have taken over their home...

It is a law I have never understood. Surely every squatter is up for trespass or breaking and entering in the first place?

Just abolish squatters rights, or any recognition of the squatter as an entity and apply the current laws. Nobody should have the right to be in a property uninvited by the rightful owner.

You hear on the news about people who have tried to get squatters out legally and all that, I wonder how many stories you don't hear in the news where squatters try and sqaut in some local nutters house, and nutter sends all his mates round for a "chat" hehe Hopefully more times than the legal ones are reported.

Seriously, if you owned a house and found squatters in there, would you not gather a load of 6ft skinhead goatee'd PH's round, break in, drag them out, beat them within an inch of their lives and tell them to fk off? Then just deny it when the police came round. What are they going to do? Report you for breaking in to your own house which you have suddenly started occupying?

Before the righteousness brigade come along, yes I do fully advocate violence against these scum, as it is proven that the current legal method does not work.

I think (someone should be able to confirm) that Trespass is not a criminal offence but a tort so is a civil matter.

I think the issue of squatters has got worse in recent years because of a change in how the Police and/or CPS view the forced entry.

Historically, squatting was not a criminal offence if the squatters had obtained entry without causing damage (i.e. through an open door or window). If entry was forced then it was a criminal offence (breaking and entering).

In recent years, despite it being obvious that entry was forced, the Police have been satisfied to call it a civil matter if either the damage was repaired or there was intention to repair the damage later.

I don't know why this change occurred but it is possible that a squatter was prosecuted and succesfully argued that the damage had been repaired or would be repaired later and this makes CPS reluctant to take further cases to court. If the CPS aren't going to bother with it then I can see why the Police say "it's a civil matter".

And once again I'm glad I live in Scotland, where neither this nor clamping has ever been an issue!

Had squatters take up residence in one of my barns a few years ago. I persuaded them to leave.

Either it was my persuasive attitude, or the two German shepherds at heel, or the shotgun in the crook of my arm... I don't know. They left and never returned, good riddance.

This is my fav quote from a certain book that im reading for the 100th (or so) time:

Starship Troopers said:
Anyone who clings to the historically untrue—and thoroughly immoral—doctrine that ‘violence never settles anything’ I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and of the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor

I suspect that squatting being 'not taken as forced entry' by Police helped to keep crime figures down - making it a civil rather than criminal matter.

No doubt some Labour will be along shortly saying how this shows the Tories want to evict poor people from their homes and how evil they are.

Careful chaps.

We won't be able to call them squatters soon, as they will claim they are a racial group and referring to them will get threads deleted.

We may need to just refer to them as house occupying folk....

Pour a large volume of cement down the toilet, remove all of the wiring then move on is, I understand, the squatters tactic when offered violence.
