Hello,

I am a complete beginner when it comes to Financial investments, as in, I have never bought a share, or stocks in company etc. However, I want to learn about the subject and gradually start making investments myself.

I have been looking through some beginners books on Amazon and I am not sure which one I should get, mainly because I haven't got a clue where to start.

Basically, what a I want from the book is to give me a good foundation on investments, stocks and shares. A basic explanation and definitions of all the specific terms and jargon, a start on all the types of investments available and a simple guide on how to start actually investing.

Obviously I won't read this book and then start throwing money around on the first tip I get, but I want to have at least some general knowledge surrounding the subject to enable me to actually understand how it all works.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! smile

Cheers

That was the one I was thinking of getting.

Have you read it yourself? What did you think?

New Market Wizards is a good starter read..

But tbh the web has sooooo much info which would be adequate for a beginner to learn from. Think about what style you're adopting (technical or fundamental or both), what time frame do you intend to invest over will help you with this...

Gain an understanding of trends.

Read.

Read some more...

I'm not sure tales of billy big balls from the City (of which there are many) will help much so focus on understanding the language of the markets and how newsflow impacts on valuations. Understand simple concepts like market capitalisations, PE ratios and their relation ship to risk. I could go on and on and on but plenty to get started on there!

Good luck.

It certainly made sense. I read it after reading a lot of other more technical books, though. From memory it gave examples of what he did as well so it's a good overview.

The market wizard series is also interesting: http://amzn.to/1b9Ykvj

Check out this site, though: http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/

The naked trader is the standard PH recommendation, and it is an interesting and worthwhile read, but it's not for you, not yet. You need some more general background first.

Try starting with some of the big mutual fund websites, which do a lot for investor education. They are of course going to steer you towards mutual funds rather than direct shareholdings, but collective investments are not a bad first step expecially if it's a low cost tracker rather than a full-on 5%-a-year managed fund.

Have a look at
