.. wants to have his (Dundee) cake and eat it?

It would be suicidal for the Scots NOT to have monetary union with the rest of the UK. By my count, the SNP’s present desire for a sterling zone comprising of the rest of us, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Scotland is the third currency position it has adopted in the past twenty-five years. This is not evidence of foolishness, but certainly capriciousness based on changing political circumstances.

This is hardly shameful, but nor is it quite the principled stand Salmond would have us believe. Expediency has its uses but let’s put his principles nature in perspective. It is hard not to be cynical about the whole idea of Scottish Nationalism but will England be prepared to stand as the bank of last (first?!) resort when/if it all goes pop north of the border?

The SNP document today leaves us with more new questions than answers.

I think Salmond's conundrum is how to get 'independence' for Scotland whilst still hoovering cash out of England.

It was laughable to see his pledge 'no increase in basic rate of income tax' - we all know from the Blair years that there are about 117 other ways to increase taxation.

It won't bother me one jot if they go independent. Scotland will go down the tubes sooner and England will go down the tubes later.

The game is up for him if the Scots support him. In opposition, at least he has a USP.. a sense of being able to justify his wages. In authority, true authority, he'll be a busted flush before he knows it, a windbag who'll get found out almost immediately.
